was listening to Dreger on TSN 1050 this morning. Dreger is confident that Nonis will need to make a move sooner rather then later. With a surplus of depth on the backend and bodies soon to come off the IR.

He mentioned that Carolina is "scouring" the market for a depth defenseman and Toronto makes a lot of sense, with Liles and Komisarek now being healthy scratches on a nightly basis.

Steve Simmonds hinted that he could see Liles going with some salary retained by Toronto... (but i wouldnt look into simmonds)

Yeah and Nonis said yesterday that they need to make room for Gardiner.

Detroit, with Carlo Coliaicovo, Smith, Kindl, Kronwall, Ericsson, Lashoff, White, Huskins and Quincey all being healthy or close to healthy, has too many D. Picks and prospects would be fine.

I don't think Toronto would retain salary in a deal for liles... His contract is reasonable but the bigger reason is the fact that teams can only carry 2 retained salaries... I don't see teams using this option on players with more than 1-2 yrs left on their contract...unless of course the return is too good to refuse

If a team retains salary do they also retain the same salary cap hit? If so, then it made sense to take the hit for Lombardi because there was only one year left on his contract and the Leafs have lots of cap space this year.

But Liles is in the first year of a four-year contract. I would be cautious about retaining a cap hit in this case. IMO there is a team who would take Liles with no strings attached. If not, then he can be bought out next summer with no cap repercussions.

Could see Gunnarson going. He'd be an attractive piece. Could also see Steckel or MacArthur moved as Frattin and Lupul are on the mend.

Liles & Gunnarsson our great assets...just don't see any prospects in Carolina's system worth them would have to be a player or 1st..

i wonder if BOTH Gunnar and Liles could be moved. It's hard to take Fraser out of the lineup at this point.

If we could get 2 first one for each the that make for a very interesting draft considering Mac will be dealt as well and would get a 2nd for sure

Not so sure I'd want to move both. Need to retain some depth. Its been key so far in getting us to where we are.

Liles with a reduced salary would have to net a pretty solid return for me to consider it. I figure

I would think Carolina would look at Gunnarsson and Komisarek before Liles. Last night Ryan Murphy played 1:29 on the PK

I won't be surprised if Rutherford goes after Liles given his love affair with offensive defensemen, but I won't be happy as that really isn't what Carolina needs given they have Pitkanen, McBain, Faulk, Corvo, Sanguinetti (and Murphy likely next year). What they lack and need a more physical, defensive defenseman.

The Canes also can't afford to take on too much salary/cap hit if they want to re-sign Semin because guys like Skinner, J. Staal, and Harrison all have increases in salary / cap. (they only have about $11M in space next year with quite a few players to sign).

I'll be royally pissed if Rutherford gives up much in the way of picks/prospects for someone like Liles, Komisarek, etc.. Guys like Gunnarson, Kostka, Holzer make more sense for Carolina, but I'd be surprised if Nonis moved any of them.

That's awful. Gunnarsson is worth significantly more to the Leafs than a pathetic third round pick.

Yes, and after that trade is finalized, let's fire Nonis.

Just because Gunnar isn't physical, doesn't mean you trade him for nothing. He's still one of the most dependable D on the Leafs.

Not anymore he isn't. Defensively Phaneuf, Holzer, Fraser and Franson are much more dependable.

Maybe the Canes would go for a 2nd. Gunnar doesn't have the greatest value at the moment.

as soon as Greene went down I thought Komi to LA might make sense

Liles to Det makes sense too

at this point I think Nonis should considering any offers for
Liles, Komi, Grabo, Kulemin, Mac

Gunnar plays 22 minutes a game and I barely see him making a mistake out there.

Gunnar won't be traded for a pick.

10 games of Holzer, Fraser and Franson isn't enough to make Gunnar expendable.
