would you walk away from 9 years of 4.5 million? Thats over 40 million bucks. No one walks away from that. He will ride the bus in the AHL and laugh all the way to the bank.
The press says RD gets his salary, whether he retires because of medical issues or not.
A buyout would pay him 2/3 of his remaining contract.
The question is does DiPietro want to play so badly, that he'll ride the AHL buses.

Its not really up to him. He is on waivers, if someone takes him then great, if not he go where the Islanders tell him, home or the AHL. If they say go home then a buyout is comming. if they says AHL then he will ride a bus for quite some time.
The guy honestly loves being here and playing for the team, which as we all know isn't too common on the Island. Not to mention he was a freaking All-Star and Olympian before his body started breaking down.
For all the guys in the league that are loaded with physical talent but have zero heart, he was almost the exact opposite the past 4 years.
I assume they're doing this so he can finish out the year at Bridgeport and then they can buy him out in the offseason.
Isles fans feel free to correct me. But, isn't Wang the one repsonsible for the contract? Pushed Mad Mike to do it.
Close. He pushed Snow to do it. The contract was signed September 2006. Snow took over in July 2006. The contract is seen by some as one of the reasons that Neil Smith was only here a month, there was speculation (not rumor, merely speculation) that Smith refused to sign DP to that contract.
This was a long time coming. Poulin is good enough to backup Nabby, and the coach will finally have some options. The DP situation simply was not fair to Nabby, Capuano, and the team. Maybe having to leave Nabby in for the 7-0 loss embarrassed the Isles into making this move. Good. They deserved to be embarrassed.

Any ridiculously huge contract is always the owner's doing. There's no way a GM would suggest it because the owner would think you're trying to clear out his cash, he would always be the one to headstart this kind of contract.

Smith was fired. He didn't quit.
Wang had tried luring Tambellini or Lombardi, into taking his gm by committee job, but both passed. Smith hadn't had a gm job is yrs and publicly lobbied for the job.
The problem was, after agreeing to work under Wang's gm by committee approach, Smith laters balked at the conditions he'd agreed too. So Wang fired him.
They know that nobody will claim him...he has a save pct well under .900 and a GAA above 3. He will back up in Bport until he is either bought out or retires due to an injury.
My guess is they think he will get more playing time in the AHL and will be more likely to reinjure himself into retirement there instead of playing once a week. Plus isles have back to back Sat and Sunday and want to have a shot at both games.
