I'd rather deal Despres, bring in a vet #4/5 D and have Dumoulin and Morrow play for us next season. Everything that Despres brings, can be replaced by those two. Morrow is too valuable to us to move.
Despres doesn't have near the offensive upside Morrow has. We need Morrow for the PP. So I agree that even though big defenseman who can skate are a valuable commodity, Morrow is more valuable to us.
Of course, that is banking a lot on Dumoulin or a vet being acquired. Ideally, we'd keep both. If I'm Shero, I'm not trading either one in a rental deal, even for Iginla.

That makes no sense. There's no way they would trade him to the Penguins after the Cooke fiasco.

If they are out of it at the deadline and we offer them the best deal they probably will trade him to us. GM's can't afford to hold grudges. I doubt Murray would sacrifice the future of his team out of spite against us.

The sens and alfie have a good relationship I think they will trade him wherever he wants to go not where the sens organization wants him to go. So basically i would think it would be up to alfie if he wants to come here.

I'm pretty sure that if the Pens offer the best package, Murray wouldn't let a personal grudge stop him from improving his team. If he was that petty, he shouldn't be the GM of an NHL club.

Maybe Murray will insist upon a Cooke being part of the return so his players, disappointed in being out of the playoff hunt, will find new 'sport' to distract themselves.

That stuff is overblown. If we give them the best offer, they will absolutely trade with us. Outside of in division rivalries, I don't really see an issue.
Hypothetically, if we trade for Ryan O'Reilly, are we going to use him as a valuable asset that same day to acquire team needs? Because he's not a winger, there's no room at center for him, Malkin or Sutter shouldn't move to wing.
It just wouldn't make sense unless we acquired him and flipped him to a team that needs a center in exchange for top 6 winger, defensemen, etc.
One of Nisky/Despres, one of Maatta/Harrington, 1st for ROR?
I don't have any inkling on the value on this one.
The way I see it, they'd want a piece that can help them get into the playoffs this season once EJ and GL return from injury. Despres can help them now and be a longterm fixture in the top 4. If that piece alone gets discussions going, then we have the assets to add to get a deal done.
If the trade market ends up as dead as last year, this may very well be Shero's only shot at finding a longterm solution for the top 6. Whether it be O'Reilly or someone from a third team in a deal.

That's a really, really good package for O'Reilly. I see 2 of those 3 plus TK. No way would I trade Despres, Harrington, and a 1st unless it's for Bobby Ryan.

Ya if they would get ROR it would have to make you wonder whats gonna happen with malkin.

So, there you go . . . probably Nisky OR Despres + Maatta, Harrington, or #1 + TK (because, Dear Vitale, someone, someday needs to get him off the list of options for Bylsma's lineup card).

This is the coaching staff that once put Malkin on Mike Comrie's wing. Why is putting him on ROR's wing so unthinkable?
Take your pick for number 8 of Dumoulin, Reese, Samuelsson
I'm gonna find it hard for them to where they need to use a buyout. That's obviously if those players you mentioned get traded.
I'm probably leaning towards on of either Despres or Bortuzzo being must haves in trades for other GM's. I'd almost say Bortuzzo is a not trade at any cost because of his physicality, and the fact this team is loaded with PMD's. Despres>><Dumoulin, but will be more equal as soon as next season. Despres leads only due to actually being in the NHL and has served the team and himself well. Despres is much more easily replaced.
Not sure what you mean? I've only mentioned the buying out of either Martin or Orpik in the off season, for cap reasons. Young D or Old D was not a factor. You can be fairly certain that at least 1, maybe 2 younger D will be with the club next season, possibly Morrow and/or Dumoulin. If you assume that Niskanen is dealt this spring and possibly a younger prospect, that still leaves Martin, Orpik, Letang, Despres, Bortuzzo, Engelland, Morrow, and Dumoulin. Still quite alot of bodies.
You do understand that deal uses about 30% of Shero's available deadline space and allegedly 'fills' one of the top six holes.
Why do that when you can just shoot MBP and save the cap space?
The Pens have more than enough cap space to acquire almost anyone. PMB will not break the bank and he has a much better shot at being a top 6 option than TK.
