After watching the season of Senators D Erik Karlsson come to an end when his Achilles tendon was sliced by a skate blade, Lightning C Steven Stamkos decided to start wearing cut-resistant Kevlar socks.

The socks, which are not mandatory in the NHL, are believed by many players to be heavy, hot and bulky. But after watching video of Karlsson's injury (he was stepped on — accidentally, most believe — by Penguins pest Matt Cooke), "you start to think," Stamkos said. "Who knows in that particular instance if it would have stopped (the injury) completely, but maybe a little bit. Everything kind of counts toward that, I guess."

With that, Stamkos took a pair of socks off his locker room seat and tried to cut them with scissors. The socks crimped but didn't tear.

"Better than nothing," he said. "On a force like Cooke's skate, maybe you still get cut there but it's not as bad."

Good to see Carolina slowed down a little this evening at Montreal.

That said, the Lightning need to take advantage and get hot again.

Yeah, but it was about time. That team needs a shake-up.

It's an ad that I don't think most teams would have the balls to make as it conceptually borders into bad taste and potentially puts things into freaking perspective.

I love it. Of course, my sense of humor is more dark and cynical than most.

Isles are placing DiPietro on waivers. Intent is to send him to Bridgeport and call up another guy.

Carolina has several defensemen injured and Skinner is out also. Yes, we expect a win on Saturday.

Skinner is usually good for a goal or two against us, so that's good.

Hope he recovers soon, though.

You have to start to wonder about Skinners durability.

Here's the new proposal for re-alignment

East
Conference 1
Carolina
Columbus
New Jersey
Islanders
Rangers
Philly
Pittsburgh
Washington

Conference 2
Boston
Buffalo
Detroit
Florida
Montreal
Ottawa
Tampa Bay
Toronto

West
Conference 3
Chicago
Colorado
Dallas
Minnesota
Nashville
St. Louis
Winnipeg

Conference 4
Anaheim
Calgary
Edmonton
LA
Phoenix
SJ
Vancouver

It seems like they're deadset on getting TB and FLA in a division with teams that geographically don't make sense. 8 teams for each division in the east and 7 in the west so teams will have to be bumped back west if the NHL expands into speculated QC and TOR which would logically take the Florida and Tampa Bay spots.

I don't get it if that's really the case.

Why not just shuffle some teams in the current 6 division format? Columbus East, Winnipeg West, or some **** like that? I don't see the necessity for this 4 conference format, especially since each conference isn't equal (which gives teams in the smaller conferences an advantage to get in the playoffs.

If you want to go to the 4 conference alignment when you add two new teams, that's fine, but until then it doesn't make sense.

but then how will the league try to convince everybody in the east (the media) that they should expand without manufacturing an argument that the west has it easy?*

*note: this plan will not work as intended
