If they use a regular buyout, his contract would count 1.5 million against the cap for the duration of the period. Not that big of a cap hit.

Islanders fans have trouble with this line of thinking too. But we feel resigned to the likelihood that this franchise will continue to try to cheat the floor.

Still, if the Isles were to buy out DP that would send an incredible message to the team, the fans, the leagues, free agents and their representatives. It would be too good to be true. It would exceed our expectations. It would instantly change our perspective about the teams potential competitiveness *next year*.

And so now you can see how impossible that would be.

Cheers,

Dan-o

No they won't.

Regular buyout would be way too detrimental to the franchise in the long run, and an amnesty buyout is a huge waste of money.

He's only under contract for 9 more years. That has to be the worst contract possibly in the history of sports.

And the total owed isn't that much more than 1 of the 5 years ARod has left.

At least Arod accomplished something. Dipietro has not had one all-star season. In fact I'd go out on the limb to say he hasn't really even had an adequate one.

not quite

waived with a month left in the 2005-06(?) season

At least DiPietro had 12 years of service before being waived. Brian Lawton was waived only six years into his NHL career. Drafted in 1983, but was waived by Hartford in December 1989. Quebec ended up claiming him off of waivers.

I don't know it, but I could imagine that Stefan or Diagle had been on waivers.

I'm willing to bet that the Isles are drifting him through waivers as the first step before they try to make a dollar savings deal. Maybe they luck out and some team's GM has an aneurysm and picks him up (doubt it).

A more likely scenario would be trading Dipietro + some assets to a big money team that can afford to do the compliance buyout in the offseason. (TOR? NYR?)

The next question would be, what kind of assets do you attach essentially for the ~24 million or so in actual money (2/3 of 36 million left on deal) that the other team would have to pay?

With Wang selling the team, I don't think he's in a rush to pay the ~24 million nor would a prospective buyer be happy with having Dipietro around for the next 9 years at 4.5 a pop.

Example only:

TO TOR: Dipietro + Strome + 1st 2013 + 2nd 2013 +/- ???

TO NYI: MacArthur(UFA) + Gunnarsson(cheap contract) + 4th 2013

Proposal above may be off but 24 million is a lot of money. Can't see a team swallowing that for a 2nd round pick.

Real sad story. Poor guy obviously worked hard to get to where he was (NHL, 1st OA pick) and just never got a chance to see how good he was because of injuries.

He had maybe 4 seasons where he didn't spend the majority injured.

I get that he got a big pay-day, etc etc but its gotta suck to lose your NHL career to injuries essentially.

Not for his money. Its gotta be frustrating having everything fall apart and getting injured so often.

Kid was a great goalie, and was looking to be one of the best puckmovers in the league before the injuries started taking their tolls. And then when the MOSTLY out-of-his-control-injuries did start piling everybody just started ******** on him, blaming him.

Hopefully his money is enough solace, lol.

I really wish the Islanders fans a much better fortune for the future. The East is much better place when the Isles are closer to the top.

Highest person I can think of with a quick, not detailed search, is Thomas Hickey who was drafted 4th overall by LA and claimed on waivers by the Islanders.

He'll get a deal I think from another team when he gets bought out. It'll be a small one, but I could see quite a number of teams looking for a stopgap backup.

Must have been a sympathy vote. No one else on the Islanders was adequate. I've looked at his numbers....awful.

Trade Luongo....pass on Heatley....draft Dipietro. That didn't impact the franchise at all.

Well they also traded Bertuzzi, Chara, Spezza, McCabe, Berard and others. The franchise is much better with Snow running it but what a hole to dig out from.
