I've started to watch more Saskatoon games to watch Stransky. This guy is going to be an absolute gem for Dallas.

Has VERY good hands, and combined with his puck protection he's deadly anywhere in the offensive zone.

He has a very quick release that seems to stun defenseman and goalies alike.

His skating is looking pretty strong as well. Does a lot of what Eakin and Jagr are able to do when they protect the puck.

Always in the right spot to sniff out a goal, and his passing is quick and accurate.

Officially added to my "Only trade for primetime talent" list.

Adding to what I was saying before-

Dallas right wing depth is scary good.

Smith
Chiasson
Stransky
Ritchie

All four of these players are going to be NHLers, and I think they'll all have pretty good careers.

That being said, our left wing situation is officially less than stellar now. We only have Fraser and Guptill (I think he's a wildcard as to whether or not he'll have a good pro career) who are in the pipeline to attempt a way into the NHL. Fraser is a pure goal scorer, and that's about it. He's a Ryder.

We really need to draft some left wingers in this next draft.

Well Gemel Smith and Mike Winther may both end up as LWers as well but they are obviously not as good as any of those RWers. If we are looking a mid first round pick again LW Anthony Mantha would probably be a tremendous choice.

Absolutely. I've been eyeing Mantha and Erne. Writing up a post for the draft thread on them now.

Never really watched Guptill, but a couple people have told me he'll be something special. Not sure I agree, just passing that on.

Don't forget that we already have Eriksson at RW, and I'd rather keep him there since he seems to produce better from that spot. Hopefully LW turns out for him, but I'd look into switching at least one of those guys to the other wing.

Wennberg is a guy I'm interested in at the draft, but he'll either end up being a reach in the 1st round for us or he'll drop to our 2nd. Doubt we end up around where he'll go.

Most guys can play right or left wing. It's strange ... since Dallas is so use to have almost no right shots, but they'll have a ton now.

Also ... Reilly Smith played LW most games I watched for Miami, and he's at LW right now. I'm not saying Dallas will hit on every single one of these guys becoming quality Top 6 or even Top 9 NHLers, but you could go with:

LW: Reilly Smith, Matej Stransky, Matt Fraser

RW: Loui Eriksson, Alex Chaisson, Brett Ritchie

This is the first time in .... well maybe ever .... that I fell comfortable with Dallas' center, wing, defense, and goalie depth in the NHL and in the system. Center is probably still the lightest, but I believe Faksa can have a big bounce back year like Ritchie has. They both dealt with some nagging injuries and consistency issues, but Ritchie was able to push through. Faksa, at least from everything people have said about him, seems to have the work ethic to also make that leap.

This is such a good draft for centers, I think Dallas could find another potential Top 9 center like Faksa to add even more depth. I'm still very excited about Shore and Winther, but IDK if they'll be centers or not in the NHL. I really think Shore will break out next year like Reilly Smith did as a sophomore in the NCAA. Shore is very likely going to end up outscoring Reilly Smith in his freshman year, and he's doing it on a much weaker team. On the other hand, you could argue that the weaker team is allowing Shore more opportunities to get bigger minutes. Regardless, I think it's a positive, and Shore is going to be a good one. I really wanted to Dallas to draft him, and I hope they keep mining that OPJHL gem. It's working well for them.

Yeah it's encouraging the way Shore has picked up the pace as the season has gone along and is getting more responsibility.

And you like you said, I wouldn't get too caught up in which side wingers are playing on at any given moment. Some of them will switch if necessary.

The Blades have finally turned into the powerhouse they were expected to be. That was their 12th straight win. Stransky continues to lead the team in scoring.

He only needs 11 more points in 11 games to match last year's total. He's proving it wasn't a fluke. This is exciting!

Faksa update (from 2/19):

Quote:
centre Radek Faksa (knee) is also improving and expected to skate this week for the first time in about a month. The Czech import suffered a MCL injury Jan. 19 and ws originally slated to miss 4-6 weeks, but appears ahead of scheddule.

Devin Shore is making a big impact at Maine, and the rest of Hockey East is taking notice:

Quote:
“He’s one of the top freshmen in the league,” said BU coach Jack Parker. “He’s got good hands, good size, he gets around the rink well and he has a lot of poise.”
Quote:
“He has really improved. He’s a lot more confident with the puck. He has a big impact on a game,” said Providence College coach Nate Leaman. “He’s strong. I was worried about him when we played them.”
Also interesting:

Quote:
Shore said he is enjoying being on the point on the power play and said it is the first time in his career he has manned the point.

“It’s definitely not something I expected to happen,” said Shore. “I guess it was an experiment the coaches tried out with all the injuries and tough luck we’ve had healthwise.

“It’s been fun. I like making plays and I especially like having the puck on my stick,” Shore added. “With every game, I feel more comfortable back there. I always try to make the smartest plays with the puck whether I’m down low, in a five-on-five situation or on the point on the power play.”

“It was a gut feeling that he could handle [playing the point on the power play],” said Maine head coach Tim Whitehead. “He’s awfully young but he’s getting more and more comfortable there. He seems to have a good chemistry with Joey [Diamond] and Jake [Rutt] and they complement each other pretty well.”
His head coach on his ability to protect the puck:

Quote:
“When he gets in trouble, he’s able to protect the puck better than most. He shields it. He doesn’t expose it very often. As a result, he’s able to make that extra play and hang on to the puck an extra two or three seconds longer than other guys.”

That's good stuff about Shore. I knew he had basically taken over the PP in terms of being the dominant force out there/getting lots of TOI but I wasn't aware that he was on the point. He's definitely got a bit of that Ribs-style preternatural calm with the puck. I like those quotes from the coaches too... it's easy to forget that he's got decent size to him as well, he's not some undersized finesse only guy out there.

Exciting night so far for Dallas prospects.

Devin Shore picked up an assist, but more importantly the team won. That win puts them in 8th place with only 5 games left to play. Only 8 teams make the HE tournament.

They play 9th place again tomorrow, and they really need a win to create some separation. Next week, they have a 2 game home series against last place Northeastern, and they only have a 3 point lead on that team. They end the season with a tough series on the road for two games against 2nd place New Hampshire.

Alex Guptill scored 2 goals tonight.

Matej Stransky had a hat trick and an assist.

Even better. When the game was still up for grabs he scored rather than the 6th, 7th and 8th goal of a blowout when the other team is demoralized and has given up. He's the guy I'm looking forward to most in Austin next year.
