Nyi - mtl

To NYI:
David Desharnais
Mtl's own 1st rnd pick (14-25)
Cgy's own 2nd rnd pick (31-40)

To MTL:
Matt Carkner
Marty Reasoner
NYI's own 1st rnd pick (5-25)

Thought process here is that Desharnais is the odd man out in Mtl's forward mix because of a lack of size and his pending RFA status. Montreal gambles here on NYI finishing below them in the standings and sacrifices CGY's pick for it. Carkner and Reasoner are both solid, veteran players that can help if MTL goes on a playoff run.

NYI get better now and add some draft pick depth. They gamble on Desharnais helping them push into the playoffs and will probably be able to re-sign him at a good rate.

I think that's a pretty lowball offer for Desharnais. I don't think MTL would trade Desharnais for Carkner and Reasoner alone, in fact I know they wouldn't, especially giving up their own first and Calgary's 2nd. The Islanders' first certainly sweetens the deal, but I don't think it's enough.

NYI 1st rd pick 5-25 thats a big margin....

Take out all the picks and I would do it from NYI perspective but I dont think MTL would do it...Desharnais is very talented

It's a bit of a gamble on both sides. But, I'm thinking that NYI get a top 10 pick this year. Those three pieces are worth that alone, assuming the Habs have a worse pick that is.

No interest in Desharnais Isles have a size issue up front similar to Montreal.

I didn't want to upset anyone, but it's really 1-10 in my mind.

Ya that's true. I'm just trying to picture Montreal's center configuration without Desharnais. Size or not, I think he's important to the Habs, more important than getting Reasoner or Carkner would be anyway.

Does MTL's 1st & CGY's 2nd for NYI 1st interest you?

No way I involve high picks and a guy who just had 60 points in his first full season for Carkner and Reasoner. Seriously here...

And if that pick end up top 5 high, I doubt the Isles would move it. Any lower than that and there's no point to trade for the Habs.

Even as an Isles fan I've got to say that's a pretty lowball offer. Habs hang up, and proceed to now screen calls from Long Island.

It's gambling, no doubt.

But would you trade DD, your first and Cgy's 2nd for the chance at a Top 3, maybe even Top 5 pick. Heck I would do it to get into the Top 10 for that matter.

As an Islander fan, you must acknowledge the chances of you picking Top 10 are pretty good right now.

It's naive to think a NHL team would make a strictly pick-based trade before draft day. I also don't see why the Habs would trade Desharnais "in hope" of getting a higher pick which is still "in hope" that that player will become a better player than Desharnais. The Islanders, on the other hand, have no reason to give up their 1st rounder (on draft day or before) since the draft is always their only realistic chance at bringing in a high potential player.

Every Habs/Isles trade thread I've seen here has been awful. I don't know if it's the fans, the fact that both teams needs and dispensable assets are similar or a combination of the two.

The only players I'd want from Montreal, as an Islander fan are players that aren't getting moved.

Fair. Very good points.

Let's fast-forward to draft day. NYI are Picking 10th MTL is picking 20th.

Is Desharnais RFA + Cgy's 2nd (35th) enough to swap spots?

Maybe on draft day, not at any point during the season.

The Isles are one of the softest and smallest teams up front in the league. Adding Desharnais doesn't help that.

You can have Reasoner for a bag of pucks though, forget draft picks.

why in the hell would montreal trade their 2nd top centermen
for 2 guys who wont even pierce their lineup?
and plus give a first rounder and their 2nd rounder for hope
that islanders finish bottom 5.. thats just awful for montreal..

Depends where does Montreal pick and where do the Islanders pick.

Let's assume Calgary has a top 5 pick in the 2nd round, that may be enough to move up 1-4 spots depending on where both teams are picking(basically if the Islanders are top 5, the most you will get is up 1 spot, if Islanders are 6-8, 2 spots, 9-12 would be 3 spots and 13+ would be 4 spots

Isles wont trade their 1st. And Montreal isn't dumping DD for nothing (and make no mistake, Reasoner and Carkner cannot crack Montreal's lineup)

On nites when we play the Bruins or Leafs, I'd give a spot to Carkner.

The thing is that if we trade DD then our trio are not balance anymore .. By doing that maybe we miss the playoff !! Now we have 4 balance trio .. 3 that has good talent and 1 that has toughness !!
Only if the isle pick is a 3 to 5 pick I oils take it ..
Jones will go out first , Drouin will be second , McKinnon third , barkov fourth and linholm fifth so I would love to have one of those player specially barkov who I think is probably the best complete forward of all those guys .. I say I'm play when I was in Finland and man he's good he's 16 years old paying with men , some will say he's not playing in the best league but the Finland league is pretty good ! He's big , fast and have extreme skill ... 6'2 , 210 pound is a hell of a big guy ... I think he's the total package specially that Finnish player are hard worker and barkov will still continue to grow I expect him to be around 6'3 -6'4 225pound in 2 years ! If I could get one of those 5 player the. Sure I do this deal
