I think there is still a lot of untapped potential in his game.

One thing I noticed is he likes to "hog" the puck, now it isn't on purpose, but there are a lot of times when he goes one-on-one on a D takes a shot and it always deflects into the screen. I wondered if anyone else noticed this. With maturity and with the speed he has he'll start going wide on the defender, and he will learn to look for his line mates(Kessel screaming in on the far side).

That lap around the entire Buffalo team last night was hilarious. His speed is good for a guy his size

I would love to see him try a sudden stop once entering the offensive blue line. His speed backs off the defenders like crazy. Just look for this, its funny

He is 30 goal material, but I can see him hit 40 goals if he finds consistency... he's only 23 years old. He's due for 25 this year no problem

Maybe you guys should get off your high-horses!

Just because someone compares a players playing style to another, doesn't mean that they're saying that the player is going to put up the points that another did.

FYI, the only fans that make us look bad are people like you.

Can't believe JVR was compared to Holmstrom. What we have in JVR is SO much more.

Rick Nash-lite is his ceiling...take away the dangles and add a bit of speed.

I like the fact the kid is only 23

We potentially have a top line winger for the next 5 seasons

Holmstrom had a career high 30 goals in the NHL. From this point on, I can't see JVR scoring any less than 30 in a season with us.

I doubt it. Lupul is a bit more established at the moment and Gardiner could be as valuable as JvR for this team going forward.

But I think we took advantage of our depth on D and turned it into some impressive forwards as obviously teams value Ds more than Fs.

That was part of Burke's plan while he was still here, though he didn't have much of a choice: loaded up on d men to address the weak forward positions, so when other teams come looking for some d help, he pried their forwards away. It worked.

When I think of JVR, I think of Mats Sundin the way he's a big body who has great wheels, can rag the puck, is good in close and a good array of shots. I don't necessarily mean a 20 year Hall of Fame career and face of the Leafs for a decade and a half, I mean what he can bring to a game every night.

Holmstrom? All he did was park his ass in front of the net all the time. An effective player but certainly not anything close to JVR in style.

Agreed. And whoever said Kessel isn't making JVR better is wrong, JVR's totals would be lower without Kessel.

Don't be a party pooper, in some of these parts Tyler Seguin is Wayne Gretzky and Dougie Hamilton is Bobby Orr.

Jvr was a boom or bust type of player. Under achieving frequently injured player in his young career an I thought the trade was an unnecessary risk. I was fed up of Burke losing out on the risks he took.

But holy Christ, jvr looks like the real deal this far.
For once I agree with you. I was pissed when the deal was announced. I will be happy to admit I was wrong here.

He's not a Rick Nash either, doesn't have the fancy stick-work, but what he has is elite top speed for his size, seriously....how many foot races has he won this year?

If he can get more physical down low, he'll be a leclair type, but he's looking more like a James Neal type player with higher upside (since he's only 23).

JVR doesn't have to be overly physical, crashing and banging, he just needs to use his size to shield the puck and angle the opponent out of the way, and he's doing that which is very encouraging to see. And he's being very effective in front of the net with his size and his great hands. He is still so young and if he keeps on developing the way Carlyle wants him to, he will be a tremendous player for the Leafs for years to come.

Been a big JVR fan for a while now. What do you guys think will happen to him offensively when Lupul returns?
