#CBJ have hired Basil McRae as a part-time scout in Ontario. McRae, a former NHL tough guy, is part-owner of the London Knights.

Guess that moves Max Domi, Nikita Zadorov and Bo Horvat right up our list ...

He coached for me a few times growing up. I still remember him yelling at me for putting one strip of tape on my stick like I was Bobby Orr....

Well that means were taking Domi with our 2nd or 3rd 1st rounder this year.

God I hope we take Domi as everyone is talking about. That kid is going to be a fantastic player. A very Crosby-esque build. He'll be the ray rice of hockey .

European Scout Larsson fired

Free to merge with the McRae hiring, but CBJ have fired European Scout Kjell Larsson, who had been with the team since '99. According to Portie's twitter....

https://twitter.com/Aportzline/statu...91832647487488

Can't say this is surprising. European scouting has either been overlooked/dismissed under both MacLean and Howson regimes, or it was simply pitful. And now, with a European GM, I'm not surprised this move happened.

Have we ever scouted Europe well?? I could think of at least 25 guys we didn't draft from there that we could have.

One example is Dalton Smith over Calle Jarnkrok. Yikes

I'm not sure we have scouted anyplace very well. Cue what about Atkinson in the 6th round, etc.

I think that had more to do with the fact he was still on The Hockey News list as a sure fire first and available when we picked than our scouting abilities.

Y'know, it's funny. Leading into that draft, everyone was talking about Jarnkrok and his meteoric rise in the second half of the season. There was talk that, rather than being in the 30-40 range, he could actually go in the 15-20 range, and certainly no lower than 25th.

Clearly a lot of teams weren't sold on him. Look at Chicago, who took Ludvig Rensfeldt 35th (also out of the Swedish juniors) and then didn't sign him.

I think the Dalton Smith pick turned out exactly as planned. What I don't think was that Scott Howson and co. expected some of the guys that went right around him to turn out the way they have. Jarnkrok fits into this group, as do guys like Justin Faulk, Christian Thomas, Brad Ross, Martin Marincin, Calvin Pickard, Curtis Hamilton, and even Jason Zucker. Smith will be exactly what he was expected to be - a 4th line grinder/middleweight, similar to Jared Boll. Any of those other guys could turn out to be as good/better if they continue to develop. In particular, Justin Faulk is already (quietly) a top-4 defenseman for the Hurricanes.

I remember being livid when we took Smith over Jarnkrok. His talent level was definitely worth the risk. Smith might be a 4th liner

I definitely wanted us to take Calle. Fourth line grinders should not be drafted in the first few picks of the second round. Calle ended up going to the Red Wings, iirc.

Jarmo's first moves, looking forward what's next

I guess McRae is a guy that looks for character and toughness.

Glad to see some changes on the scouting front. It will continue to be interesting to watch things play out.
