There is speculation that the NHL is looking at multiple outdoor games next year. Leafs/Wings at Michigan is already confirmed. Los Angeles and New York City are being talked about. I am hoping we could possibly get involved with another outdoor game as a road opponent. That'd be really sick. I'd for sure go.

Maybe I just don't have a full understanding of LA's climate.. but isn't it warm/hot there year-round? How are you supposed to put a rink outside?

A Road Hockey Winter Classic? Roller blades?

Posted on the thread on this on the main board, that I think it'd be a great idea to host an outdoor game annually in a southern market as the night game of Hockey Day in America. Seems like a great way to celebrate hockey in this country, by having an outdoor game somewhere 'non-traditional'.

Weather has no effect on the ice making system. They've already played an exhibition game in Vegas in September.

I'd love to see the Hawks play at Cowboys Stadium.

That would be badass!

I know there's synthetic ice and all that, but you can't tell me the players would be okay with it. Not to mention, the players would be playing an intense, draining sport in 20 degree weather (celcius), which would put even more stress on their bodies.

The Winter Classic is about getting back to hockey's roots.. what would it mean to a Southern market fanbase? Nothing. Hockey's meant to be played in the cold.

Ideas:

-Hawks/Wild at Target Field
-Hawks/Blues at Busch Stadium
-Hawks/Rangers at MetLife Stadium
-Original Six team/Hawks at Soldier Field
-Hawks/Stars at Cowboys Stadium
-Hawks/Blue Jackets at Ohio Stadium

I'd love a Boston/Montreal - Chicago game.

You mean...room temperature? Oh, the humanity!!

The players would be fine. It's 58 (15c) in LA right now, it wouldn't be hard on them at all.

It'd be about celebrating this game in this country. Celebrating the fact that you don't have to come from Canada, the northeast, or the midwest to enjoy it. Hockey isn't 'meant' to be played in the cold, it only started there before technology allowed it to be moved anywhere with electricity.

They probably have the most to gain in southern markets - where it's usually a struggle to garner interest and ticket sales. that being said - yeah I want another in Chicago.

I totally agree. That's why places like Cowboys Stadium should be considered.

Too bad there aren't soccer stadiums like the ones in Europe in America. Look at the setup below. Talk about an atmosphere. Lord.

There's one big problem with Cowboy Stadiium. A team that nobody cares about plays in Texas. That alone kills that idea.

There's a significant difference between sitting in a room at 20 degrees and playing a high-intensity sport, outside, with the sun beating down on you.. especially when the players are used to playing the sport at a significantly colder temperature. Not to mention, the amount of equipment the players and especially goaltenders wear.

So you celebrate a sport in a place where the majority of the people couldn't care less about it? Sure, they might come out and support a chamionship and there are diehard hockey fans in the south, but the majority of people couldn't care less about hockey.

A couple other ideas:

NBC loves the Captials, and Denver is actually going to have the prototypical climate.

Yeah, hope Colorado eventually gets a WC as well, if only for the unlikely hope that they revive the old Colorado Rockies look (with Devils permission, which shouldn't be an issue as they don't care about pre-NJ days) for their sweaters.

The sun isn't that hot in say LA, Nashville, or Dallas (indoors anyways), at 4-5pm in February.

Vancouver @ Soldier field would be a blast...if NBC would go along with a Canadian team in it.

Yankees Stadium won't host the Winter Classic as long as they have the Pinstripe Bowl, so it would have to be for this other game later in the season.

Yeah, but it'd have to be 2015 and beyond perhaps due to Vancouver and Edmonton as finalists to host the 2014 Heritage Classic.

that was the opening game of the 2010 WC, right?
Germany beat the US Team while my most favorite goalie shut them down all game long. Great times. Wasn't at the game. Too pricey for me to go there.

I don't like the idea of more than 1 outdoor game a year. It should stay as something special. And that game in Germany wasn't outdoor, roof was closed.
