June 10, 2000 - Calgary trades JS Giguere to the Mighty Ducks for a 2nd round pick. We later traded that pick to Washington for Miikka Elomo (who played a total of 2 NHL games) and a 4th round pick, which we used to select Levente Szuper (who never played an NHL game). Ultimately, we traded Giguere for nothing.
July 31, 2000 - after signing him as a free agent, Marty St. Louis played 69 games as a Flame and registered 20 points, playing mostly on the 4th line and often a healthy scratch. The team made him available at the expansion draft and, after going unselected, they bought out his contract and he signed with Tampa. To date, we has 874 points in 947 games, and we lost him for nothing.
June 23, 2001 - After selecting him in the 3rd round of the 1999 draft, Calgary failed to sign Craig Anderson to an entry-level contract, allowing him to re-enter the draft. He was selected by Chicago in the 3rd round of the 2001 draft and Calgary once again lost him for nothing.
November 15, 2002 - after being acquired in a trade with the Rangers, Marc Savard played 221 games over 4 seasons with the Flames, scoring 154 points in that time, second only to Iginla. He was traded to Atlanta for Ruslan Zaynullin, who never played an NHL game. If you haven't already noticed the trend here, we also lost him for nothing.
Now imagine for a second what this team would look like had we not made those 4 moves...
The Savard move was brutal. Without a time machine its hard to fault the other moves though.
Who knows if Marty St. Apple would have developed so incredibly here as he did with Tampa, but had he not been in Tampa we would certainly have been playing a different team in the '04 finals...

After watching Hagman, Stajan and Babchuck play for the Flames, and seeing Keith Aulie make the Lightning this season, I wish the Flames traded Phaneuf for absolutely nothing. Sometimes nothing is actually better than something.

Lighten up dude I wasn't criticizing, just thought it was interesting is all.
Sutter never went with the "best player available" policy. That's why they went for high risk reaches in Pelech and Chucko.
I can accept the Pelech and Irving picks at the time.
But I still cannot accept Chucko over Travis Zajac as both were playing for Salmon Arm in the BCJHL and were linemates. That means Calgary's scouts saw Zajac just as much as Chucko.
I still remember sitting with my Hockey News draft preview watching the draft and saying - Zajac is a guy we gotta get, that big center Calgary has needed for years.
I was flabbergasted when it didn't happen.
The thing is you can miss alot with your first rounders but not every time. Just change the '04 draft and keep all the others and we'd be in a whole different boat.
I wasn't a fan of getting Rene Corbet for Fleury either, but I think Regehr was involved too.
It was Calgary's choice from one of Colorado's first round picks from the 98 draft - so it was Calgary's choice of Regehr, Scott Parker, or Alex Tanguay. Thank dog they didn't pick Parker.
I was one of the posters defending getting rid of Savard, and I still do. The guy was nothing but an egotistical punk, and was a complete distraction in the dressing room. Ya, I wish we could have gotten more from him, or that he could have been more mature and been that centre Iggy so needed. But we didn't, and he wasn't. No crying over guys that force their way out ala Phaneuf.
Now, the Giguere trade and losing St.Louis - that hurt.
Don't forget Brett Hull, and those Phaneuf and Regher trades
The Hull trade helped us win the Stanley Cup. I would do that trade again in a heartbeat.
I even have no issues with the Regehr trade, he is no where near what he used to be and it saved a ton of cap space and it got rid of the piece of trash named Kotalik.
The Phaneuf trade sucks in hindsight, but at the time it was for a top 4 defenseman and 2 top 6 forwards when the Flames lacked serious depth.
