I would still trade Zibanejad for ROR if only because ROR still has upside and is already much better than Zibanejad. With that said I've always maintained that we don't need to make the trade. It's not a necessity and Zibanejad has special tools -- the question has always been with whether or not he has the IQ to make it where he can be a special player. Jury is still out.

IMO Colorado is in a very difficult situation.

Either ROR does not want to play for the AVS and will sign for 3.5ish million for another team or he really thinks he is worth 5m on a long term deal.

No team is gonna want to give up a big package for a 2nd line center that they have to overpay to a long term deal

Giving up Zibby to overpay for a second line center that we might not need.

Not that Ottawa is a Cap team but Zibby + 3m extra cap space or ROR....Not a tough decision

I wonder what it would take to get bouwmeester? Watched him play a few games this year(and again tonight) and I think he would look great next to Cowen.

Puempel, Wiercioch ???

Method/Karlsson look really good early this year
Cowen/Bouwmeester potential to be the best 2nd d unit in the league
Phillips/Gryba

Without giving up to much that could be a great d

I'm not opposed to this but I think you might have to up the offer slightly. Calgary would have to commit to a rebuild in order to let Bouwmeester go and I'm not convinced they're going to do that.

I'm pretty impressed with the way our defense is playing right now so upgrading our forwards may be the larger priority.

Ottawa needs another left shooting "D" like it needs more injuries.

I don't know why people want to rush young defensemen that aren't ready for the NHL into the lineup...

I really like the idea of adding Mark Streit next year if Gonchar leaves us as expected.

No one is saying rush his development but if he is ready thats his spot and if he is 2 or 3 years away we still have have Gryba Patty etc

I think Murray should take a look at Blake Wheeler RFA seasons end

Greening Zibanejad Wheeler could be very scary SIZE SKILL SPEED

Who are these knowledgeable hockey people that have questioned his IQ?

Zibanejad at 19 years old is just starting to show what he is capable of, not in junior hockey, but in the NHL.

Wheeler would be a great acquisition, but I would be very surprised if the Jets didn't pay him full value.

There are so many bodies on D, and now we're talking about adding more.

LD = Cowen, Methot, Wiercioch, Phillips, Borowiecki.
that's a huge problem. Even if one goes RD, that's still one too many.

Benoit could be the 7th guy.

Gryba and Karlsson on the right.

8 bodies for 7 spots and now we're talking about Streit. Who goes?

edit-I guess it's Streit or Benoit. Both of them in the lineup at the same time is a no no.

Taking a quick look at the UFA dmen for this summer, the only notable right handed shot I see is Ian White, he could end up being a decent replacement/stop gab for Gonchar until Ceci is ready, but not sure if Detroit will let him walk and how much he'd want on the open market if so.

you mean left?

Karlsson
X
Gryba

I'm cool with 2 righties and 4 lefties if one lefty is a natural RD like Gonchar (or JBo, but not saying I want him).

The real problem is Cowen, Methot, Wiercioch, Phillips, Borowiecki are all natural LD.

Yep...pretty much this. Wheeler would be amazing on a line with Smith and Greening, but there's no way that the Jets let him go IMO.

Honestly, I was under the impression that Streit was capable of playing the right side like Gonchar does now. Could be wrong.

It may come down to Benoit v. Streit. Or Phillips decides to retire, Boro still not ready.

The main issues I was thinking of addressing with Streit was 2ndPP PMD and more veteran leadership which would be the void of a departing Gonchar.

Yeah Streit can play the right. But he's not as good defensively as Gonchar. Asking Streit to play on the 2nd pair against scoring lines is too much to ask at this point in his career imo. He may be doing that in NYI, but it's not going well for them.

For me if Streit is here it's taking Benoit's 5-on-5 role (3rd pair RD) and Gonchar's PP role.

Karlsson
Gryba
Streit

I'd be ok with that, but there are still too many bodies on the left

Would you all do the Smith for Hammer deal today? With the emergence of Zibby maybe its possible..Zibby is better at C.

Next year Spezza,Turris,Zibby down the middle would be sweet.
