With Stalberg and Tlusty also taking regular NHL shifts this was a great haul by JFJ and Co. that year. Six of seven of his selections are now regular NHLers.

Only two in 2007:

4/99 - Matt Frattin

7/194 - Carl Gunnarsson

But that is no small contribution to the club's present make-up.

Burke was certainly right in giving credit where credit was due. And it's a testament to just how important patience and development can be.
So we had a solid scouting department. GMs get way too much credit when a team drafts well, and way too much blame when things go wrong. I can't know for sure, but I would imagine that after the first round, GMs have very little input as to what happens.

That being said, JFJ was in an awful situation here where he was pressured to make the playoffs at all costs. I don't blame him as much as I do Leafs ownership for the whole fiasco.

JFJ was as effective as Burke in that he couldn't solve leaf goaltending nor could he get the team into the playoffs. Both GMs were very comparable in those regards.

I'd love to see Toronto take Eric Locke from Saginaw this July.

It's pretty clear JFJ was was an intelligent hockey man and that his hand was forced by MLSE in many of his decisions/trades.

that's called being the boss. you get the credit and take the blame. you are responsible and accountable for the results.
