Feeling a win with this one. The Canucks always seem to bring it against the Wings. Even though the Wings wont be as strong as they were in the past I suspect we'll up the effort anyway.

That said, I predict a close game. 4-2 Nucks with an empty net.

Booth
Kesler
Lappy
Daniel

No Kevin Bieksa on the ice for #canucks morning skate. Andrew Alberts will play for the 1st time this season. Looks like Luongo starting.

Faaaaaaaaaaantastic.

Update: It gets even better. No Booth at practice. Kassian will replace him on the 3rd line with Raymond and Schroeder.

Ok, if Booth re-aggravated his prior injury he deserves the ire of everyone. Don't come back sooner than you should! Do we have confirmation on this per Murphy?

I was half expecting Bieksa to sit out. No point in playing through groin problems.

Edit: I find it hilarious that Bowness's answer to one injury (Bieksa) causes him to shuffle _every_ D pairing to compensate. Just brilliant management there. Now it's the injury as well as the pairs you have to worry about, not just the pair than Bieksa has left.

Play Tanev all game.

Canucks will beat them down. Sedins always go beast mode against Detroit. Kesler will also be flying out there. This game won't be close.

Well, the only other option is to give Alberts the same even-strength minutes as Hamhuis.
No, thanks.

Yessss.

No offense to Booth but I'd like to test the waters some more with these three.

Especially if he needs the healing time.

And does anybody remember which game it was that we were gunna rock the new Heritage jerseys? I remember it being against Detroit.

No, thanks.

The ES time given to all pairings right now is pretty comparable. Alberts would fall right in line with that scheme.

And that's not the only option, they could have kept at least one of the pairings intact, say Edler-Tanev. But now, everyone is playing with someone new against a skilled offensive team. It's not wise.

Could we see Alberts and Datsyuk on the ice at the same time?

Ruh-roh.

I like him too. He has played very solid when partnered with Tanev.

The problem is that Edler, Tanev, and Ballard are the only three able to play the right side so you were going to have to have at least two new pairings. No way to keep Edler-Tanev together.

But I agree the obvious answer was Garrison-Ballard Hamhuis-Edler and Alberts-Tanev.

And also just to add, it's another time when it drives me crazy that we carry our 7th and 8th d-men as both left-side guys. Rome and Alberts were the same way.

I don't think it's about the icetime as much as the match-ups. Tanev has played with Hamhuis before in a shutdown role (did so for stretches late last season), so AV must be more comfortable playing the two together in a shutdown role again.

And given that Alberts hasn't played a game this season, they likely want to shelter him and put him on a 3rd pairing they can manage against weaker forward lines, instead of putting Edler in that role and limiting him.

The Wings are a team that you likely want to have a shutdown pairing against, and if you're going to put a shutdown pair together without Bieksa in the lineup, Hamhuis and Tanev make sense given their history and Tanev's safe, low-risk game.

Sucks for Booth to miss the game in his home state. He was strong in the game in Detroit last year, IIRC.

Yes, I see the point about putting Edler on the right now that Bieksa is out. That very well could have been the reason they went this way.

Hamhuis and Edler have been decent as the lead pairing. I could see either this or the Hamhuis-Tanev pairing working. If you go with the first one though, it allows you to shelter Alberts with Tanev on the 3rd pairing while keeping Garrison and Ballard as your 2nd.

But whatever, I guess we'll see how the pairings fare today.

As long as he stays as a #7.

I'd sooner just give additional icetime to Garrison & Ballard - leaving Alberts with scraps (eg., only on the ice when a faceoff is in the opposition zone or neutral ice).

And Darren Helm suffers a setback in his recovery:

Quote:
Darren Helm: He will fly to New York on Monday to see a specialist who deals with muscles and ligaments. He hasn't skated since Jan. 26 due to back pain and has appeared in only one game.

“He is progressing daily, but not nearly as fast as we had hoped,'' Holland said. "We've ruled out a disc or fracture. We think it's a ligament strain or sprain.''
Cruddy luck on both sides.

I agree. With six guys who can handle big minutes and not enough ice-time to go around, when one of them goes down, they should just spread it out amongst the top 5 to pick up the slack. That's still less than 24 minutes a piece (if my math's not wrong, 24 minutes only applies if Alberts plays zero minutes).

On the plus side, this will help Alberts stay somewhat fresh, and that will be important down the road.

Both Howard and Luongo are fresh off shutouts against the same team. Interesting head to head (although has it been confirmed Lu is starting?)
