O'Reilly's not been given a bad offer. He's an RFA with no arb rights looking for his 2nd contract and kudos to the Avalanche for sticking to their guns and making him earn his money and forcing the system to work for them. He's apparently been offered the same as Duchene, and if his "I shoulda been the captain" attitude is accurate, he sounds like a "me-first" player. Talented? Sure, but it's not as if he's lit the world on fire either.

They'd want Henrique for O'Reilly. No thanks for me. Considering Henrique's next contract will probably be cheaper than whatever O'Reilly finally agrees to. Or at least a bit lower than what he says he wants right now.

Lou will never give a +$5M contract to a 22 years old RFA. And I'm ok with it.

$5 million for him is a joke. Especially when he isn't that much of an upgrade to Henrique. Henrique will also likely not even get near $4 million on his next contract.

The general consensus on O'Reilly is that the Avalanche will not trade him. That there's such an insignificant difference between his demands and the Avalanche's offer that the League's GMs feel like this will get done. Just going off of Tweets from Colorado's beats.

It seems like the Avalanche have a history of mistreating players come time to negotiate deals. The big fear now, on Colorado's part, is that they burned irreparable bridges between ROR and the organization and now ROR doesn't want to play for the Avalanche anymore.

I sincerely believe ROR is a once-in-a-generation caliber talent, very much worth a 4 million cap hit over 7 years (which is the rumored ultimate cap hit, here). Signing this kid for a 7 year deal at a 4 million dollar hit is beyond a steal and takes him through his prime.

People forget how good he is.

His own team in first obviously. There's not a chance we could and should trade for him in my opinion. I wish him good luck though.

I think the general consensus is that O'Reilly and the Avs are at the point of no return and will definitely be parting ways via trade.
The Avs are a team that have decided to work the system properly. Unless you are actually a "once-in-a-generation caliber talent" which O'Reilly is NOT, you are at the mercy of the CBA. No arbitration rights, restricted, no more cashing in big time on second contracts. If you're Stamkos, you get paid. If you're a generally average top 6 player, you wait for your opportunity. More teams should "mistreat" their players this way. Maybe the system wouldn't get so out of control.

Not saying O'Reilly isn't a nice player but he's done nothing to show he's the next big thing.

Talent and player are two different things. Becoming the player that can harness and utilize that talent is something few players can achieve.

But there is no denying the kid's talent - in my opinion.

**** O'Rielly, the guy obviously doesn't understand the idea of being a team first player. I hope he doesn't get a contract and he misses a year of his playing career. I would never want a player like that on this team and I'm 100% sure Lou wouldn't either.

I think that's a little unfair. He was one of the best players on the Avalanche last year and made the least amount of money. This is his first chance at making "real" NHL money. In a league where the stars where a gigantic target on their back, I can't knock him for attempting to secure a contract he feels he is worth.

No one heard a peep out of ROR last season about his contract. I can't knock him for this.

Yeah you know its cold when Greg Sherman puts his hands in his own pockets. It's 50/50 to me. But still too much reason for not wanting ROR here as a RFA.

Crosby is a once in a generation talent. Gretzky and Lemieux are once in a generation talents.

Ryan O'Reilly is not a once in a generation talent.

No one is denying his talent. You're the only person that thinks he's on the same level as Crosby, Yzerman, Gretzky, Sakic, Lemieux etc.

He's more of a Jordan Staal than the former names. And, he's only played 3 seasons. I think we need to cool down before we start giving players "once-in-a-generation" talent labels.

The funny thing is we could have drafted O'Reilly. But instead, we took Josefson. Maybe trading up that year bit us in the ass. O'Reilly's good, and I actually agree he is worth that contract, but his talent is not on legendary proportions.

Generational talent is the dumbest term, and I've only heard it on HF. Thankfully this was the first time I've seen it on the Devils board. ROR is far from a generational talent (and I hate that term!).

Zidlicky has a strong slapshot so you can't leave him with space.. makes it more dangerous since he can beat you with his shot or with a pass. Larsson needs to strengthen his slapshot first IMO or teams will know exactly what he's going to do.
Having a guy with a strong slapshot on the point is nice, but not really required. The main role of that defenceman is to be a good distributor, moving the puck quickly and accurately between Kovy and Elias. Zid does that well and so does Greene. I think Larsson could do it too. Merrill and Gelinas are also possible options in the future.

I would move Gelinas, Tedenby, and a 2nd in a heartbeat for Ryan. He has the potential of a Top Line Center. Put up a ton of assists at age 21 last year. He refuses to sign with the Avalanche.
I would prefer to move Urbom instead of Gelinas, but if we could get O'Reilly that cheaply, I would do it. Colorado will get better offers than that though.

While I don't want to make too much yet of what kind of impact Loktionov could have, I'm starting to wonder if Lou considers dangling Josefson in the right trade.

Okay I cannot stand this

Some of you guys on the trade board are looking to trade for bottom 6 guys, like Chimera, Nystrom etc.

We have plenty of bottom 6 forwards...we need a guy like MacAthur who can put up atleast 45-50 points, not some 25-30 point guy. It doesn't; help us

So, what do you guys think the value of Tallinder is now?

I know we all wanted it to be someone like Mason Raymond, but I can't believe he'd a fetch a return like that. At this point, I'd be happy to package him off to a team for an expiring third liner and a conditional to fill the void missed while Zubrus and Carter are gone.

Something like Eric Nystrom + conditional pick.

And give up what?

Talinder isn't going to fetch a MacArthur player the way he's been playing. We can't afford to give up picks anymore, we only have our 1st (?), 2nd, 4th, and 6th in this years draft. No one is giving up that type player for a prospect like Urbom unless a high pick comes along. It's pretty much all we can settle for now, to fill the void of Zubrus and Carter and hope they impress.

I can see a Tallinder+ for Gagné type of trade. Basically a deal between 2 playoffs contending teams having opposite needs.

There won't be enough sellers, the few ones are going to ask for the moon and probably get it. I don't want to see Lou overpaying for a rental player.

Tallinder might not be that great but he can get you more than a 25 point winger

I would do it for Clutterbuck tho

It's still a bit early and I think we could see quite a bit of separation over the next month still as there is potential for a couple of teams to go into significant sell-mode already with more to follow (Sabres, Jackets, Flames).

I definitely agree on the latter part. I don't see Lou really making a big splash here during the season. More likely he'll look at the type of move you proposed or look for a cheap shoot-first forward for a B level prospect. If we want a serious solution as a top 6 winger/scorer, it's probably going to have to wait for the offseason, especially depending on how all of our own UFAs get handled (Zubrus, Elias, Clarkson).

@NHLDevilsPR: Ryan Carter has been placed on IR, retroactive to Feb. 18. #NJDevils have recalled Jacob Josefson from @albanydevils
