Plekanec, easily.

Others will steal the show at times but nobody is as consistently good at everything (usually) as Plekanec is. He's actually 4th on the team in average time on ice (behind Markov, Gorges and Diaz), meaning he's playing more than half the defense is. No other forward comes close to that, and there's a reason for that.

I don't find pleks has enough grit to his game. There has been way to many checks not finished by him to be best all around. He playing very well but not best all around for his position/role

If you think that Plek's position/role involves 'finishing checks' as a major part of his play, then you have no earthly idea what his position/role is.

Plekanec isn't the type of player to play the body as first resort but he hardly avoids contact. He's not physical but the same can be said of a lot of jack of all trade types who typically are in the running for the Selke over him, such as Bergeron and Datsyuk. Neither of them are overtly physical either. If anything, Plekanec is more dirty than them, as he plays an extremely chippy style.

Speaking of this, I was sad to see the Selke Frontrunners thread on the main page and not a single non-Habs fan mentioned Plekanec. Granted out PK is kind of mediocre right now, which is hurting him.

I'm not saying pleks should go out and try to play like Eller but finishing your checks is part of the new style this team plays and to be best all around pleks needs to do more of it. Not all the time but more then he does

I fail to see how having Plekanec take himself out of plays to finish his checks would make the teams style of play more effective.

Finishing your checks doesn't take you out of the play it helps to wear down the other team in over the game and is a very effective form of forchecking and does not take a player out of the play when properly executed

No votes for PK? You guys are crazy.

Only way Subban doesn't take this is if you factor in the fact that he missed some games. In the games that he's played he's been our best player not named Price. Even in that blowout vs TO he was our best player along with Gallagher.

PK by a mile.

I think not having Gomez around is a huge boost to the team. That and no Martin. He never really rewarded players. He stuck with the same old same old.
I second the nominations of Gomez and Martin in the best "not around" category.

I dunno about a mile but I do think PK takes it. Or Prust he hasn't taken a single shift off all season

Also not having the Kostitsyns is a huge boost, those boys didnt bring it every night like our rookies do.

Plekanec

Edit. Typed Tommy P first then read thread. Very pleased. Rare consensus.

Plekanec for sure, but I'm really impressed with Eller and Diaz to a lesser extent.

I don't think price is this team's best player. he's part of the team but not the reason we're at the top. I don't believe his numbers are all that great this year, and wouldn't even be a part of the vezina discussion. y favourite thing about price is how healthy he is and how much he can play. it's a rarity.

pleks right now, pk in time. I think pacioretty would be there if he could stay healthy, he's extremely talented.

pleks ability to play in all 3 zones makes him special.

Close between Plekanec and Subban but I'll hand it to pleky.

Don't forget he has historically had pretty weak faceoff numbers. Those things are pretty important in most people's eye for the Selke, and IMO, the only thing holding Plekanec back from not just being nominated, but winning it. This guy is a stud.

Finishing check is more the responsibility of the wingers. A center that doesn't have the puck will more more focused on his defensive game rather than finishing check.

Also, Plekanec has never been a really good or strong hitter, I don't see why we should ask him to do something he's not effective at and that will put him out of his comfort zone just for the sake of it. He's not the grittiest guy but he doesn't need to be and it helps him to stay healthy.

Datsyuk has 5 hits, Zetterberg has 9 hits, Krejci 9, Bergeron 9, Toews 5, Crosby 10, Malkin 5, Tavares has 4 etc.. etc...

Plekanec has 8 hits so far this season.

So yeah, not all players need to finish their checks as you can see. When it's not their duty and forte, I don't see why we should expect it from them. Their are perfectly effective at their role without being physical, let them be.
