It looks like they traded the worse travel schedule in the West for a greater chance of making the playoffs, which is at least more fair than the last try. I hate the in-conference playoff concept though. It's just a money grab to have all the northeast teams always on TV playing each other. There's nothing to prevent the best teams having an early matchup, and the last time the league did this it was pretty much always the same teams in the playoffs. And while it also screams expansion, that means no Quebec City, no Markham, no Toronto 2 without having to realign again.

The unbalanced divisions don't matter. The league was unbalanced before - there were 21 teams from 79-92 and nobody questions the legitimacy of those cups. Detroit complaining about being in the West is such a stupid whine fest as well, it's been over 30 years since Detroit was in the East, they've had west coast division members since 1974, and 10-12 entire games a year that aren't done by midnight isn't really the end of the world.

Why do they have to call them the Eastern or Western "Side". Call them Conferences, and change the Conferences to Divisions. Just seems like they're making it more complicated than it should be with syntax.

Anyway, it makes sense geographically.

The proposed one. I'd rather have Colorado in there.

It's not syntax. DVM got it right: it's cynicism. Calling them conferences legitimizes the incestuous early playoff matchups that result, because all the media darling teams will be playing one another.

As an addition or as a replacement? It's a brutal conference regardless.

It's not just syntax - playoffs occur within a conference until there's just 1 team left (the first two rounds). So they get all those lovely northeast 1st round matchups, 2nd round matchups, then could conceivably have a Stanley Cup come exclusively from the east coast. It's NBC's wet dream. The downside is (based off of how it worked out when they used to do it this way)you see pretty much exactly the same first 2 rounds of playoff series. Every. Single. Year.

I'd take either, but prefer the addition. It bugs me that the East gets both of the eight team conferences.

Why would you want a lower chance of making the playoffs? It's in the team's best interests to be in a smaller conference.

Didn't I read somewhere that unbalanced conferences is an issue to the PA? Players in 8 team conferences have a harder time making the playoffs (have to beat out 4 teams) than teams in the 7 team conference (have to beat out 3 teams). Therefore, and unfair pay advantage. Did they not express that last year when realignment was initially put forward?

I'd rather have a better conference. Besides, I'm sure two more teams will join the league soon enough.

That, and travel. Perhaps by making the Western Conferences smaller it balances travel disadvantage with playoff chance disadvantage. They may have traded a guaranteed playoff spot from the west as well. There's also a school of thought the PA saying no was just the first act of Fehr telling the NHL to piss off.

It makes the most sense to have a 7 and an 8 in both east and west, then have the top 3 in each guaranteed playoff spot with the next 2 highest totals from those two conferences getting in. Actually, it makes sense to just stop screwing with things until they have expanded to 32 and just swap Columbus and Winnipeg, but what do I know.

I think if you compare the two western conferences we ARE in the good one lol. Adding Colorado makes the most sense, but I'm not sure they're going to be good until there's a change in management. They seem like a bit of a gong show.

They're talking about a preliminary play-in round in some, but not all, of the conferences to balance the playoff chances.

I would take that gong show over the ones in Alberta.

With the recent CBA fight fresh in mind I can't see a reason to rush into expansion again. If you can't make A 30 team league financially in balance I don't see how expanding to 32 improves the odds.

The owners will get temporary amnesia about financial stability when they see the size of the expansion fees the new teams bring.

To be honest I have no idea of how it would work, I just assumed that they were going to replace the divisions with the conferences, and that there was going to be the same 8 best in each "side" going to the playoffs with the same kind of seeding where 1st seed plays 8th. But it's something else I see.
