Chemicals impacting British otter penis bones

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/21534742

Quote:
Experts studying the reproductive health of the mammals in England and Wales were concerned to find a decrease in the weight of otters' penis bones.

Other health problems in males included an increase in undescended testicles and cysts on sperm-carrying tubes.

Experts suggest that, based on previous research, the changes could be linked to hormone-disrupting chemicals.

That sucks. Never a better time for lady otters to start selecting for more hydraulic penises.

In the meantime, it'd be nice if we could figure out which chemicals are causing this and stop them.

Also, I never considered the idea that you could get funding to go collect and measure otter penis bones. Sounds like the job of a lifetime.

Is this a case of 'largest animal so far'?

I remember reading a ton of articles/research on the same thing (but more dramatic) happening to fish and reptiles across North America.

How did they even get funding for this?!

What was their proposal?

"Please give us x amount of money, we want to do a study on Otter penisis."

O_o

Easy, just ask this:

"We would like to make a study on the impact chemicals have on animals."

penes vs. penises;

Quote:
Many people who deal with penises professionally use the Latin-style plural penes instead. That's fine too, but even among urologists, penises seem to predominate.
