I love this idea, and I think people are misunderstanding it. It wouldn't be 2 conferences one with 14 and one with 16. It would be 4 conferences two with 7 and two with 8.

There would be no East/West. Conference Champions would face each other in the semi finals and if I understand it right (based on reports last year) they would be reseeded and 1 would play 4 in the semifinals and 2 would play 3 in the other one.

In other words the Leafs could play Vancouver in the semi-finals and then play Pittsburgh in the finals. There would be no east and west.

Most importantly, you have to play out of your conference in the first two rounds which means conference rivals in the first two years. The NHL has idiotically tried to create rivalries by making teams play 6 regular season games against their division. The way to create rivalries is in the playoffs. Imagine seeing the Leafs play the Habs 2-3 times in the playoffs in 5 years. They would hate each other much more than they already do.

this I will also add for those saying 7 teams vs 8 team conference is bad, it's clearly shows me there setting up the conferences so that they can expand the league to 32 teams allowing all 4 conferences to have 8 teams

It makes sense. They're not going to break the Atlantic teams.

I can't get my head around the uneven divisions. Just seems weird. Wait till relocation and or expansion and see where everything sits. What's the rush?

What a beautiful division.

And he also mentioned a wild card format for a cross over between the 8 and 7 conferences.

There are three other conferences, but lets be real, this is clearly the most important one and only solidifies our claim to being the centre of the hockey universe.
It won't last, Quebec will need a spot.

As an original 6 NHL hockey follower, I love the idea of a division that includes the Leafs competing against Detroit, Boston and Montreal (other original 6 teams).

It brings back great memories of once what was.

New alignment could only have been better if NYR and Chicago would also be in the same division.

I like the alignment, as long as teams will play all other teams outside their division home and away.

As much as I like Tampa Bay, I can't help but wish they'd GTFO and take Florida with them, as they're ruining a classic division.

I think that we should keep the current alignment as it is now, until Phoenix relocates to Seattle, and we get 2 expansion franchises in Markham and Quebec City. Then I would realign the teams like this:

Eastern Conference
Northeast Division: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, Markham, Boston, Buffalo, Carolina

Southeast Division: Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington, NY Rangers, NY Islanders, New Jersey, Tampa Bay, Florida

Western Conference
West Division: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Jose, Anaheim, Colorado

Central Division: Detroit, Chicago, Winnipeg, Nashville, St. Louis, Dallas, Columbus, Minnesota

I hate the uneven split up, it is stupid.

Get rid of 2 teams like pheonix and another team that gets negative profit.

With 28 teams make 4 divisions 7 teams each

As long they address the imbalance come playoff time with a wildcard, as Freidman said they would, then I have no issue with the uneven divisions. As someone else said, this sets them up nicely when they eventually expand to 32 teams.

One of Tamp/Florida will move to Quebec, with Markham and Seattle most likely be getting expansion franchises.

Why the **** would the NHL want to expand?

We have enough teams that are functioning under heavy losses. We should just get rid of 2 teams, they are weighing the rest of the league down.

I don't disagree with you. But I think Seattle and Markham would be viable expansion franchises. The current under-performing franchises you speak of will not be going anywhere as long as Bettman is in charge. He will expand before contractring. Hence why I can see a 32 team league materialize in the next ten years.

If it was up to me I'd contract a few teams even, but the league definitely WANTS to expand to 32 teams.

I'm just wondering if they account for expansion in this realignment, one would hope so.

With this structure the East can't accommodate more teams.
That would mean should Quebec get a team they'd play in the West? I just can't imagine yet another realignment once expansion happens, that would feel so stupid.

it would be better to get three divisions

Division 1

LA
Anaheim
San Jose
Phoenix
Vancouver
Dallas
Colorado
Edmonton
Calgary
Winnipeg

Division 2

St Louis
Nashville
Florida
Tampa
Carolina
Columbus
Washington
Chicago
Minnesota
Detroit

Division 3

Boston
Toronto
Ottawa
Montreal
Buffalo
New York Islanders
New York Rangers
New Jersey
Pittsburgh
Philadelphia

Top 4 teams in each division make the playoffs
of the teams that are not top 4 in their division
the nest 4 best records will qualify for the playoffs

this will give every team two chances to make the playoffs
and would make playoff races more interesting

wow if the leafs can't make the playoffs with the way it is now.......... it will be another 5 years before we come close to playoff hockey. Seriously that division is stacked. It's a great division but stacked for sure. I would rather there be 7 teams in our division...

The teams in the first two conferences have a 50 % chance to make it in the playoffs.
The teams in the second two conferences have a 57 % chance to make it in the playoffs.

Not fair.
