Islanders: Worst expansion team (at the time) to dynasty
Buffalo: SC finals in five years
Atlanta: Solid expansion team
Kansas City/Colorado/New Jersey : Mickey Mouse team that deserved to get blasted by Gretzky & learned their lesson
Vancouver : Crappy expansion team that got out of the wilderness first
Washington : Crappy expansion team that got out of the wilderness second
Edmonton: Cheated by having Gretzky
Winnipeg : Decimated by the merger but became competitive , but couldn't break out
Quebec : Decimated by the merger but became competitive, crapped out & cashed in on draft picks later as Colorado.
Hartford : Decimated by the merger but became competitive, but didn't go anywhere {except Carolina}

By far the worst is the Capitals and Scouts---that 1974 expansion can be potentially seen as a mistake. The Caps could have gone under had they not hired David Poile in the 1982 offseason to completely remake that team.

I'm going to ignore the WHA teams absorbed into the NHL and consider pure expansion teams and say that the best was the Buffalo Sabres who hit the jackpot with Gilbert Perreault.

... well, I just have a problem with the entire premise of this thread. St.Louis & Philly, particularly the Flyers were the most successful Expansion Franchises regardless of the fact that they came in in 67, though I guess arguably you could include the Islanders, born in the 70's proper like. Seems to me we should be asking who the Scouts, Coaches & GM's were in those cities and understanding what they did right if you dont already know that. And many of us do....

The Devils have been a legit dominant franchise since 1993-1994 with 3 cups and 5 cup finals appearances to show for it...they were also pretty decent from 1988-1993 but still not on the NHL map. They've only missed the playoffs twice since 1990.

The Islanders were amazing from 1975-1985 and pretty good from 86-93...we know what's happened since.

Isles have the extra cup but have really been bottom feeders for far too long at this point.

Neck and neck between these two. Isles have the edge early, Devils late
