Doesn't Richards have a contract that falls under that new rules? If we trade him than he rites, aren't we stuck with the hit...?

I was going off of what people on the Trade board were offering for both players.

Nashville has been in the market for a #1 center for YEARS. They have the money and it will help their internal cap vs salary cap in the future.

Detroit probably has a 2-3 year window for seriously competing with Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, etc.

Gaborik slides in as a pure goal scoring winger with Datsyuk, which allows Franzen and Bertuzzi to play with Zetterberg.

They have a TON of young, skilled players. Jarnkrok, Sheahan, Tatar, Nyquist, etc.

I think those would be good destinations for those players and it helps re-stock the Ranges system quickly.

Yes. But that is years down the road. He has 7 years left after this one. Not out of the ordinary for him to play those 7 years, especially considering Nashville will not be a cap team and he will be making ~1 million in his final years.

Not uncommon for players to waive those NTC or NMC's once they realize they aren't in the teams plans anymore.

What if Richards decides its not worth playing the final 2 years of his contract at 1m per?

Yes but the NYR being stuck with a cap hit if injured or retires before length of contract would be wise to compliance but out him rather than risk. This causes you to not gain an asset but not take on empty cap .
NYR have assets to sell if they happen to totally implode and completely go on a 10-15 game stretch of sun 500 hockey which is looking very realistic .

Although hard to replace :
Girardi
Gaborik
Boyle even Staal are all players who would fetch good return to a serious contender come deadline .
GABY a # 1 and or NHL ready young player prospect
Girardi same thing ( RH shut down d man on a good contract )
Boyle as a fourth liner on a legit contender / face off / defense specialist might garner a 2 nd or a good prospect or 3 rd liner with toughness .
Staal : same deal a 1st or a top D man prospect .
If NYR fall far out of it they should identify a young cap friendly core , restock with top picks / prospects and have a look at a complimentary UFA that fits a young up tempo style . The NYR heard this direction fell short when the pack guys couldn't score enough to take it all the way . Time to re boot under new cap and have another 2-3 year plan.

You are saying that because you wouldn't be paying the buy-out.

Why are you trading Staal?

Then that's his decision. I have not seen many players (besides Naslund) who retire when they have a contract still.

As hard as it is to replace either him or Girardi they would garner the most return . Wouldn't move both but would move one of them for the fact a team would more likely be willing to go all in for a legit cup shot with one of them .

Because he has no idea what he is talking about? Because most teams trade their best defenseman on a good contract at 26 years old. We LOOOOOVE tradesssss....otherwise being a fan of a team is boring.

Richards has some huge salary years coming up. Nashville is already paying Weber a mint. Cap recapture hurts the Rangers. They can still possibly take a cap penalty in the future if Richards doesn't fulfill the term of his contract and Richards is traded. Compliance buyout means the Rangers are only obligated to the buyout which doesn't count against the cap. Richards retires on them, the Rangers will take a cap penalty if he doesn't complete the contract. No black and white. Crystal clear.

I should preface everything I have been saying as I don't think the team needs to go into a rebuild, just need to re-allocate their financial assets. Maximize their UFA signings while they can and use that money on players who can make a difference on a more consistent basis.

Look at a player like Nash, Bergeron, Staal, etc. Those guys impose their will on the game. They are difference-makers whether they score or not. Those are the guys that dominate in the playoffs.

For the final 7 years of Richards' contract, he will make an annual salary of 5.14 million/season. His cap hit is 6.67 million.

For a team who would worry about their internal cap moreso than the cap ceiling I would think that contract wouldn't be that bad. The Preds were 100% willing to pay both Weber and Suter and there were talks of them offering Parise a BIG contract as well. They had the money set aside.

The last 3 years of the Rangers contract at worth $1M each. The contract was structured as a 6 year deal. The last 3 years drove the AAV from $9.5M to $6.667M. The NHL wants those years to count if the player retires. They wouldn't have counted in 2005 CBA if he retired. $57M of the $60M is in the first 6 years.

My problem with the Detroit trade is that they do have a ton of young skill players and like you said it won't be long before Datsyuk, Zett and Franzen are on the way out. They'll need those young players for their future. I don't think they give up that much for one more shot with the current core. I'm not saying they would not persue Gaborik, but I'm not sure how much they are willing to give up to get him.

As far as Nashville goes, a similar problem. How much are they willing to pay for a guy we are wondering the same thing about right now? How much is left in Richards tank? He is technically a 1C and I agree about the cap, but again the question is how much are they willing to pay?

I think teams are more desperate for that shot at The Cup than people give them credit for. What would someone pay for Gaborik as a rental? Top prospect + 1st easily. They would get him for a full season.

Nashville has a lot of depth. They draft well in the later rounds like the Rangers do. I doubt they would worry about replacing Ellis or their 1st if they could finally fill their #1c hole that they haven't filled for a LONG time.

I think the easy solution is to buy Richards out in sthe summer of 2014.
I honestly don't think any team is trading for him with the potential disatser on the back end of that contract unless he really picks up his play (in which case fans won't want to buy him out).

Nothing is going to happen until this Summer at the earliest. Can/should the Rangers be testing the water on their players (Staal, Girardi, Gaborik, Boyle)? YES, but NONE of them should be dealt unless it's an over payment.

I also don't get why Rangers fans are so anxious to run Gabby out of town. A pure goal scorer. How do we replace that guy?
I'd be thinking of ways to re-sign him to a cap freindly short term (3 year) deal next summer as opposed to trading him.

The core of this team has this season and next. If by trade deadline next seasion things are not looking good there will be huge changes based on the expiring Staal/Clallhan/Lundqvist contracts) that summer.

You stop as constructed this team is built to win the cup ?
Low skill , low scoring , poor at face offs , no D men who can shoot .
Having a team that can't score on PP and only can win one goal games most if the time took its toll last year when the team was good. I'm sorry my opinion is t same as yours but I'm seeing a passionless misfit team with mid range skill , and a defense that as good as some people think is universally lacking in shooting and puck moving ability.
So yes I'd like to rebuild around the prospects we have well one of te sacred cow ad men to a team that is ready to win now for a top prospect and 1 at rounder and hope to not just be another bubble team but a legit powerhouse

I think a team like Vancouver would overpay for one of Staal or Girardi with a top prospect and a pick or roster player to get over the hump .
Last year everything clicked got a lotta last minute magic and still came up 6 games short and were taken to 7 by lower seeds twice . The core of the team took a big hit in Dubi , AA , Prust . The new core players who are replacing them are not ready for prime time and probably might not be for 2-3 years . Sorry I'm in favor of a rebuild for next year but I honestly don't see this squad with concussion problems / injuries and a league worst PP pulling an La Kings and getting hot and blowing everyone away.

Vancouver is the one team who most likely WOULD NOT trade for a defenseman.

What are you rebuilding with? The Rangers don't have their 1st rounder.......

Staal and Girardi are still both well under 30 years old........

You put Fasth and Lindberg in the core but not Girardi and Staal.......

Would trade one of them to the team at the deadline in need I and willing to pay for a tough playoff hardened shut down guy . Yes it hurts but how are the rangers going to get cheap top end talent in return .
I the NYR's injury problems continue and they fall out of it you don't think they gamble and sell off pieces to a contender willing to overpay. ?
Also so far what exactly have you seen from this group that has shown its ability to be taken seriously . So far they pretty much do nothing exceptionally well at all

They can't score goals. Moving Staal and Girardi would leave the team with NO DEFENSE.
