‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Hearing WSH and defenceman John Erskine are on verge of two-year contract extension. Currently making $1.5m on final year of 2-yr deal.

MOD EDIT: Confirmed per Mike Vogel

I guess it needed to be done, but I expected more trades from Washinton than signings.

Not a crippling contract by any stretch of the imagination, but not a smart deal (especially with the cap decreasing). Nearly $2M is an awful lot to pay a #6 defenseman, especially one who finds himself benched in favor of guys like Tyler Sloan, Jeff Schultz, and Shaone Morissonn.

I don't mind keeping Erskine in DC, but I was hoping for a pay cut, not a raise.

You're living in the past. He's played his best hockey this season.

That's the problem. It's unsustainable.

Erksine hasn't sustained that level of play in the 400+ NHL games before the past 10. There is no rational reason to expect otherwise.

How come weeks/months can pass without a single trade or signing/re-signing, and all of a sudden there's multiple signings on one day?

Same thing with Ellerby, Thomas trades.

Good for Erskine btw.

EDIT: And now Schlemko aswell.
EDIT2: And Lashoff...

What's the explaination?

Me too. Or sign him this summer since he would have been UFA

Eskrine is a badass and exactly the type of D the Habs need. I guess we'll have to look somewhere else.

Big John is physical, but I wouldn't call him a badass. If there is someone to fight on the Caps first up is Matt Hendricks. Says it all, but Big John is very physical along the boards and usually deals with unwanted pests in the crease. Just wish he was a better player so he could be on the ice more.

Anyone who can dance with the likes of Lucic , Orr , Parros , Belak (RIP) , S.Thornton ect and not look out of place and even win some of these fights is a badass in my mind. I don't follow the Caps all the time but from what i've seen of him in the games i watched and with the multiple videos of him dropping against top heavyweights i say that he's one tough SOB

That's what the Habs lack. A tough and physical D with size who can play decent hockey , capable of clearing the front of the net and also deal with any enforcer in the league if needs be. That's why i sort of drool over Eskrine since from what i've seen he does pretty much all that. Deryk Engelland is also a player in the same mold that i like a lot.

I heary ya, and I am glad he is on the Caps for the reasons you listed, but he doesn't fight a lot. Thats all I meant.

Damn, wanted the Rangers to trade for him.

Big nasty defenseman that plays well in his own end and can play slightly above his calling in a pinch.

Still remember him kicking Rupp's Ass in the WC and Rupp finally asking him to stop because he "lost" his contact.
