I've never seen a player with the offensive skillset he has so afraid of using it.

He is quite a bit better defensively, so yeah, he is better than the cup season. He is well worth the money he's owed.

Maybe the expectations were too high?
The expectations were absolutely too high. I've always been high on the guy, but I've heard him called the next Lidstrom.

That's just nonsense.

No one has called him the next Lidstrom, thats absurd. I have heard Kronwall, which he has easily become defensively...offensively is another story.

But to say his contract was based on his expectations, would mean he was expected to be a middle pairing Dman, which he easily is. If he was expected to be Kronwall he would of been paid close to 5mil. And its not like we had much of a choice with the number on his contract, and I'm glad we picked him over Niemi.

No, someone did compare him to Lidstrom. I think it might of been Scotty Bowman.

Yeah, here it is: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/4...as-hjalmarsson

Scotty Bowman also compared Marcus Kruger to Henrik Zetterberg. I like Kruger just fine, but I do think the old man may be senile.

Kruger hustles every second of every shift. Outstanding PK guy.

And no love for Oduya in this thread? Dude's been solid gold since picking him up late last year.

So bad that the Hawks are 27-2-7 in regular-season games when Oduya is in the lineup?

Maybe he's just the lucky charm.

Why tarnish a Hammer thread with words of Odoodoo?

If you really can't appreciate how good Oduya's been - and he's a big part of why Hammer has been as good as he has - then I really don't know what to say to you.

Oduya has played well in his role this year. As long as his minutes are kept down, he'll do just fine.

and you think that he's not worth 3.5 million a year?

just because he outplayed his first contract and now seems to outplay this contract, doesn't mean anything. As long as he helps to win us games, we are fine.

Niklas Hjalmarsson
19 games, 49 blocks, 16 goals for, 12 goals against(4 PP), +8, 21:05 TOI/g, 3:12 SH TOI/g
Prorated
77 games, 199 blocks, 65 goals for, 49 goals against(16 PP), +33, 21:05 TOI/g, 3:12 SH TOI/g, 1620.85 TOTAL TOI/g, 240:24 TOTAL SH TOI/g

77 games, 137 blocks, 51 goals for, 58 goals against(16 PP), +9, 19:39 TOI/g, 2:09 SH TOI/g, 1493:03 TOTAL TOI/g, 160:93 TOTAL SH TOI/g

So on pace for 60 more blocked shots over a season, on ice for 14 more goals scored for, on ice for 9 less goals against despite 120+ minutes more of ice time and 80+ minutes more of PK time.

Certainly, he has not improved. Granted the Hawks are playing amazing right now, but a lot of that is because Hjalmarsson who has IMO hit a new high defensively. Smarter decisions with the puck, better positioning, and just much more intelligent out there. I remember he was great defensively in the Cup year but he was so frustrating with his only move in the defensive zone to just blindly throw it around the boards...many times being turned over and held in the zone. This year if he can get it out by throwing down the boards, he will..otherwise he looks for a better pass out of the zone. Not to mention he is literally blocking everything in site and is a huge reason why our PK has been incredible. He is worth more than 3.5 mil this year easily and that is all that matters even if his offensive game hasn't reached its (hopeful) peak quite yet.

Hammer has really improved, and I think Oduya has been a great partner for him. They both have great chemistry. Very impressed with Hammer overall.
