Hmm I know it seems thats what he is saying, but it actually isn't.

He wrote on an earlier blog, that part of the reason a series of trades haven't happened is because of Carter. Carter is asking for 3mill per year and thus if he signs on, some teams won't be able to take on more payroll, for example, Detroit.

So the Carter signing will have a big impact on what teams trade what player, and thus Carter has Montreal, Detroit has a couple of other teams playing the waiting game, meaning they are wairing for him to decide for trades to begin happening.

I would not want him at $3M, especially since he has had such a see-saw career.

Code says we're talking with Sykora...

We don't have the room in cap space or roster space for another top 6 winger...Maybe someone is on his way out?

I think you answered it right there. Where's the sense in signing Carter so that it can drop a 60-point scorer to the fourth line?

Signing Carter and Ryder would put our cap at $45-46M - pretty sure neither Bob nor george wants to do that.

Bob is done on the UFA front.

i think we have the cap space... but we surely dont have the place for him on roster... i think we are more sellers then buyers now since we have to make place for kostistyn, grabovsky, latendresse or chipchura on our roster.

Some of those guys must have a board with a spinning arrow and 30 teams... and decide of the destination of free agents based on the direction of the arrow when it stops after spinning it day after day.

I'd like him but not a 3M a year.

There's no room for him.

If we got him wouldn't that make Johnson a 4th liner? Johnson is not a 4th liner, he is good enough to be a decent 2nd liner.

Don't think so.... it's not even an Eklundesq kind of rumor. Gainey is trying to get rid of floaters...... (still someone mentioned Johnson was a floater)....... and we already have Ryder who fits Carter's shoes.... no need for Carter if Ryder is there.

Actualy, I would not be surprised.

In the past many players have used the Habs to get a better offer.

what's left in the UFA pool is starting to get nervous that nobody wants them. After waiting by the phone, still no GM big huge contract, so now they sould be on the phone asking for a JOB.

Thats like Brashear calling Gainey and stating if you must have me then I would consider it and if the Numbers were outstanding, but you will need to twist my arm a bit more

from what i believe, Carter might have called Gainey, but Gainey prefers to keep a free spot for a potential rookie.

that would be a huge blow for the youngsters who will battle for the final spot in the lineup in september. so unless they trade someone, they won't sign another forward.

I don't beleive this

Gainey said that there was only one spot left on the team and that it was reserved to one of the youngster (whoever will impress the most at the camp i guess).

Carter/Sykora could have been a possibility if we omly had acquired 1 player so far (Samso or MJ ).

The only intriguing part here is that Carter is a shooter. We have a team with an awful lot of passers.

That's it.

To be honest it's either a ploy from Carter to drum up bidding for his services, or it's a ploy from Gainey to get Ryder's signature on a contract.

I'm leaning more towards the former.

Why would we want to do that? Ryder is younger, cheaper and has more potential. Carter is asking for to much and has a hard time putting two good back to back seasons.

I wouldnt mind having Carter a few years ago, pretty decent complimentary winger, who hasnt had really bad seasons outside 03-04 when he got traded with Jagr. But now we have enough wingers to play with, rather use that money towards Ryder who is basically same player... I wish Canucks could keep him.

How could he? Gainey himself said in the press conference that the Habs were NOT in the Samsonov sweepstates until the very very last minute when they gave him an offer. How could anyone have predicted it if the Habs were NEVER after Samsonov until minutes before the deal was signed?

It's funny that this post was the second or third in the thread, yet every one that followed it merely repeated the same sense of puzzlement and confusion as to why Gainey would have made an offer to Carter.

Anyway, in case you're wrong (which I doubt), I can only join the head-scratching: why Carter if Ryder? Whither Johnson? Where the rookies and sophomores? Why also Carter for only 500k less than Samsonov?
