Seems fair from Shanaban's explanation.

If TooToo or Scott Nichol boarded Sharp from behind like that, I would hope someone would jump him.

As far as the suspension, I'm kind of surprised by how short it is. Seemed like it was going to be a 5+ game suspension, considering the request for an in-person hearing (which Clowe waived).

Shaw ask for a Shark to rough it up with him after that hit, but its got to be a player on the ice that does it.

Shaw was simply standing up for himself for the mugging he took about 20 seconds prior to that.

If the refs had simply called a penalty on Pevelski at that time, the rest would be avoided.

I don't get how it's a legal change when Pavelski pretty clearly never even attempts to get on the bench.

True...but Shaw DOES need to cool it. He can get a little dirty and can be aggressive at the wrong time. Stuff like this and the hit to the groin from Wisniewski might be what Shaw needs to realize he needs to keep himself under control.

People complain about needing sand paper in the line up, people complain about a player playing with sand paper in his game. You can't explain that.

Sure you can. It was a dirty hit. People want grit, but not a player who will provide that grit by authoring out dirty hits.

the only real thing that was wrong was that Clowe jumped out of the bench and wanted to fight a way smaller guy

Thats what gritty players do, they play on the edge. Guys like Clutterbuck, Marchand, Simmonds....hell in 09 Eager and Burrish had plenty of iffy hits. I remember in 2009 playoffs when Burrish cross checked Phaneuf and broke his stick over his shoulder and put Phaneuf out of the series. Or how about when Ladd took off Keslers head about 40 feet from the puck?

Eddie mentioned Shaw got boarded just before...no call. Then his next shift went after the first person he saw. Curious if anyone saw if Shaw got boarded earlier.

Still Shaw needs to cut that type of stuff out.

Big difference between gritty play and dirty play.

And players that play gritty often go over that line. You aren't going to find too many gritty players that don't have a past full of borderline hits.

Borderline is fine. Shaw blasted a guy in the numbers.

I'm with Illini. A dirty hit every once in a while never hurt anyone.

Well, that's not true at all. But you get what I mean.

No he didn't. Go watch the video around the 40 minute mark. He tries to get his right arm around Pavelski's right shoulder, you can see this evidenced by him shifting all of his weight on to his right skate (his left skate actually goes off the ice). Pavelski doesn't turn and catches an edge when Shaw makes contact and goes into the boards. Its not like he just ran him from behind.

You want guys looking over their shoulder. Thats what sand paper guys do. They hit people slightly late, they charge guys, they board guys, they take runs at people....thats what people are talking about when they talk about grit and toughness.

I'll admit to only seeing the hit once and it looked bad at first blush.
