My guess is you are not going to see the word "South" anywhere near a division name...

Yeah, they're not going to go back to the old-style names for the divisions. They're going to stick with geographic names.

.... though considering the "Midwest" will have teams in Colorado, Tennessee, Texas, and Manitoba, I'd like to think that they wouldn't name the division after a geographic region that over half the teams aren't even within. Just name it the Central and call whatever they're planning on calling the Central something else.

I was thinking along these lines too.

East - Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Toronto

Atlantic - Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington

Central - Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, Winnipeg

West - Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose, Vancouver

Geographic names make much more sense from a marketing point of view

Using player names is a nice nod to former greats but it's confusing to new comers which is no good for the NHL

How about Gretzky, Howe, Lemieux and Richard. Because no way in hell you can pass on naming a conference after an Habs. Orr can have a trophy if you want to honor him hell he should have one anyway it long overdue.

It is not that difficult to figure out. When I first got into hockey before the internet, I actually went to the library to look up where the division names came from.

The NHL should stay away from naming the divisions after people...we will be fighting over those names for the next 50 years.... just have general names

I know, but when someone asks, that will be my answer. Last year, when the Rangers clinched the Atlantic, there was a picture going around facebook where someone made a banner similar to those that hang in MSG that said, "PATRICK DIVISION CHAMPIONS 2011-12"

They should just go back to the old names. They carry tradition, etc. I'm guessing they are scrapping the Northeast moniker because it now includes the Florida teams, and it'd be odd naming a division the same as the conference. But calling it Central is just as stupid.

Either the geographic region or go back to what it was years ago. I'm 100% not in favor in all that Howe/Gretzky ****.

I don't want the Rangers to play in a division who's named after a player on my second-most hated team. I'm sure others feel the same about playing in a division named after Lester Patrick, but they aren't comparable, IMO. The NHL and the sport of hockey would be entirely different if it wasn't for Patrick. The only thing that would be different if Lemieux didn't play hockey is that there would be one less team in Pennsylvania.

Just wanted to add that Manitoba is essentially the Mid-Western province in Canada, similar to Minnesota. Colorado, Tenessee and Texas I agree with your statement.

Current names are quite boring I find and don't really have any "history" behind them, at least with the others there was a backstory. I'd go with updated names though;

Gretzky
Orr
Lemieux
Howe

So would that mean the current NE teams + Florida teams and Detroit would be the new Atlantic division and the current Atlantic teams + Carolina, Columbus, and Washington would be the new Central division?
