If you could get Shattenkirk for Coburn, I think you do it and I am a big Coburn fan. Shattenkirk is a top 4 right handed puck moving defensemen, a rarity in the NHL (which is why I doubt he is available). You can replace Coburn in free agency with someone like Smid or Hainsey in the offseason, but there are no quality right handed defensemen available.

What motivation would St Louis have for making this trade?

Guys like Knuble will have value come the deadline if there are injuries or someone wants to add a front of the net type guy. I'm not saying he'll fetch anything of value, but if the Flyers are selling at the deadline I could easily see Knuble being dealt. Value at the deadline is much different than value in the offseason.

They have been looking for a left-handed partner for Pietrangelo for years now. Coburn can play those hefty minutes they look for.
Coburn-Pietrangelo would immediately be in the conversation for best pairing in the league.

They also have another right-handed guy in Polak who could play top4 minutes. Russel-Polak is a decent 2nd pairing.

Trading righty for lefty, better defensive defensemen versus better puck mover. Coburn is a 1st pair defenseman on St Louis, while Shattenkirk is a 2nd pair defensemen. I said I doubt Shattenkirk is a available as I doubt Coburn is available, but that is the only trade that would make sense IMO for Coburn.

Shattenkirk is nearly 4 years younger than Coburn, has more than double the offensive punch--
and oh by the way- has less than ⅓ the cap-hit of Coburn.

Does Coburn actually make more than 5 mil this season? Oh, dear...

Hard to see St. Louis volunteering to improve Philadelphia's situation by acquiescing to this...

Oh no..... Eklund is reporting we have interest in Big Buff out of Winny........

If he loses weight I am all for it, but I don't want that fatty on this team..

It isn't going to happen immediately, but I have it from three sources now that the Flyers have interest in acquiring Dustin Byfuglien from Winnipeg. They like his size, his ability to play defense or forward and his scoring touch.
He does have a reasonable cap hit for the offense he brings, but god darn that guy needs to shape up.

And no Schenn, or Couts I would not trade for him. Weight problems and some question his maturity as well. Boating while intoxicated. We would need to think hard before trying to trade for him.

Now seems like a good time to pry Myers away from Buff, Coburn +?

Eh. If he could be in shape, I'd consider it, but there's no guarantees with him.

Trade for him, get him into shape, and if he isn't don't let him play?

Big Buff would thrive for the Flyers. I think he is a good hockey fit with all the puck possession -- what he does when he has it at least, getting pucks to the net, etc that the Flyers need.

Never really liked Buff. Not because I don't think he is a solid player. He just comes off as a huge d-bag to me

Flyers need someone to get pucks out of their own end, not at the opposing net.

I think another problem is that almost all of our D tries to get the puck up the wall and out, but the other team already knows that and takes advantage of it. Flyers d-men aren't turning around and putting it in the middle half of the ice |xx|+++++|xx| (where the +'s are).

I whole-heartedly agree, but suppose Mez is definitely on his way out due to injuries and you can get Buff out of Winnipeg (and we aren't on the 5-team NT list) for something we are okay parting with. 5.2 million for 4 years (IIRC) -- upgrade from Mez, right? Defense could use another upgrade.

I'm saying, conditionally, that Mez is broken (suppose) and the price is right. Buff can come in and make an immediate impact. He's not that much more expensive than Mez.

he's 27 year old 6'5 monster thats' good for 50 points a year on defense. he also upended our 6'5 monster in the finals which turned that horrible game 5 around for them. i hate him too, but we NEED him or we're goin nowhere. problem is who do they want?

What would Winnipeg even want in return for him? I just don't have a clue what his value would be.

Also if we do get him, he needs to lose weight. They would need to tell him that from the start. His size is a big deal to me I am starting to realize lol. But it shows his dedication to the game.

So what teams need a 2nd line center/winger in the form of Briere? Vancouver? Maybe the Ducks still need an actual 2nd line center/winger? Would like to package both Briere and Talbot for a 1st, maybe another pick and possibly a good 3rd/4th line guy that is a great PKer.

Never gonna happen without massive overpayment. Jets D is crippled. Maybe once Trouba makes NHL, but that is 2 years away.

Brayden, Guss and this yrs 1st may get a sniff from Jets, but doubt it. I wouldnt do it as i am not a Buff fan.
