You'd think the Lady Byng was for spelling based on all this butthurt over it.

I disagree about the President's Trophy. Being the best team in an 82 game season is an accomplishment. Whether they're knocked out in the first round, or the Stanley Cup Finals, it's hard to take away the fact that during the grind of an 82 game season no one was better.

I agree about the Lady Byng. Especially the William M. Jennings. Why a team stat is awarded to goaltender(s) is beyond me. It's the same reason I don't like when people look at wins (a team stat) when evaluating a goaltender and his performance.

I think the Gold Glove is a nice award too. Defense in baseball cannot be overlooked. And it doesn't just go to the best hitter. Omar Vizquel was never a good hitter and he was an 11 time gold glove winner. It just so happens, that sometimes, yes sometimes, a great hitter is also great in the field (Ken Griffey Jr. comes to mind right away).

Another vote for the Lady BYNG (it's not a search engine). "Wow, you had 12 PIMs (all for lazy tripping/hooking penalties), put up more than 50 points, got demolished in at least 5 hits, and avoided physical contact all season. You're so sportsmanlike and gentlemanly!"

They might as well call it the Brad Richards Award.

ice hockey - individual
William M. Jennings Trophy

ice hockey - team
World Championship

football [soccer]
Olympics [my winner]

Funny thing is that the IHWC is by far the most popular sport event of the year in the Czech republic.

I'm not going to talk about other sports because... well, because I don't care about them.

Lady Byng - While this is certainly the most embarrassing award to win, I wouldn't consider it the most pointless. There is something award-worthy about guys like Sakic, Francis and Datsyuk who are highly effective without breaking the rules.

Jennings - An award for the scoring champion makes sense. An award for the GAA champion doesn't. Especially when guys like Robert Esche, Mike Dunham, Darren Jensen and Denis Herron end up on it. The best thing you could say about this trophy is that it's a litmus test for whether someone really "gets" goalies.

Mark Messier Leadership Award - Leave it to Mark Messier to get involved with a corporate-sponsored trophy where he puts his name on it, picks the winner and goes on TV to present it. It has some marginal legitimacy as an honor, but what a completely ego-driven venture on the whole.

Plus/Minus Award - This is the king of them all. Corporate-sponsored. Stat-based. Irrelevant. Basically just a revenue generator for the league and a doorstop for a lucky player (and I do mean lucky in the literal sense). The only award for which there have been six ties, the most recent being between Michal Roszival and Wade Redden. The only award that Jeff Schultz, Paul Ysebaert or Paul Cavallini will ever win. Going back through history, it has been called the Bud Light Award, the Alka-Seltzer Plus Award, and the Emery Edge Award.

Congratulations, Plus/Minus Award, you win the award for Most Irrelevant Award!

Kings won the cup for last year. They ran roughshod over the other teams in the playoffs. They were elite when it mattered. Cup champs = elite all day every day.

Regulate dead-last teams. That'll learn all these 'tank on purpose' teams and make the regular season a lot more meaningful, imho.

What's so embarrassing about it? Not every hockey player has to be violent in order to be effective, as you said. It's a style of play that some of the greatest players to ever lace 'em up have used..

You pretty much repeated what I said in the rest of that paragraph.

Nevertheless, the Lady Byng is still a "nice guy" award named after an old lady. It's like having your grandma present you with a "my favorite grandkid" tshirt in front of your 9th grade class.

No, the Kings won last year. President Trophies winners are the best team, the Cup winners are the Champions. American sports culture values Champions way more, which is fine, but the best teams are determined by the longer regular season.

Do they give one out for the slam dunk competition in the NBA?

Now that's a pointless endeavor.

I don't think you are going to find too many that agree with you. Players don't go all out in the regular season like they do in the playoffs, when it matters.

Yea they do at the all star break. It's one of their skills competition. It was cool for a few years until the novelty wore off.

Since the Presidents Trophy started being awarded.

You have had

6 winners go out in the 1st round
7 Won the Cup.

To me it means nothing.

King Clancy Memorial Trophy

I'm sure plenty of guys to great humanitarian work that they don't necessarily disclose. I don't like having a trophy for it though.
