This looks great! I was nervous about the whole wild card system but it looks like it'll work.

As long as we don't have more teams make the playoffs and a west team playing in the east due to the wild card, it's all good!

16 playoff teams is more than enough. And hopefully they don't bring in a one game playoff system like they've talked about where more teams make the playoffs only to play a one game playoff.

Nice to see it'd be all Central teams in the division (other than Colorado). Looks like next year is the year I start disliking the Jets.

Looks like I'd better start looking at trashing my season tickets then lol

In a division with 6 other teams > in a division with 7 other teams.

If we replaced Colorado with Detroit it would've been perfect. No big deal though. Like this.

Hate the wild-card/crossover thing...

If they want to go back to the old fierce division rivalry days just do it. Two games against everyone not in your division and spread the rest in-division, no crossover. That way you're playing as close to an equal schedule as possible against the teams you're fighting for playoff spots with.

Also, you start having only three teams from a division getting in and you run the risk of only one intra-division playoff series in a season (in a given division) if team#4 (crossing over) beats #1. How's that build rivalries ?

My feelings too, but this is still going to be fun. Hawks, Blues, Stars, Jets . . . awesome!

Agreed. At least it's a lot of the old rivalries back -- bar Detroit and cuts on travel.

The new playoff format does not make sense and needs to change.

My playoffs:

Top three teams in the division make the playoffs. #4 and #5 have a one-game playoff for the last spot.

I don't care if you have 7, 8, or 20 teams in your division, if you aren't top five in points, you're out. One game playoff takes care of it. Can we find a situation in the last 20 years where it would have made a difference? Probably not.

1 vs 4, 2 vs 3. Best of five first round. So we're not playing in June.

You have divisional playoffs first two rounds, then best two teams in each conference, then the Stanley Cup.

No more having to stay up till midnight watching the end of a 0-0 game that's in OT.

That is precisely how I feel, too. I also hate the Stars in our division as well.

1. They shouldn't even BE the Stars.
2. They aren't anywhere near us in proximity.
3. Did I mention they shouldn't even have a franchise?

So yeah, I would have liked Columbus and Detroit (more Midwestern cities) in our division and Colorado and Dallas chucked.

Oh well, this is still good.

I know Yeo likes his team to go north-south, so this will help I think.

As a Jets fan, I love it. Then if I move back to Winnipeg I'll be sure to drive down to catch a bunch of games in St. Paul, and maybe even Chicago!

Am I correct in saying our game against the Jets last season was awesome?

I remember it being sweet, I guess I can't remember for sure.

this may be elitist or what not, but no 5 game playoffs, 7 games its 7 it just feels wrong to have it any other number.

These are still being called conferences, not divisions, so you still have to play out of the conference first. Will just be odd with some teams playing in another conference's playoff rounds as a wild card team.

No chance in Hades that the owners would ever drop two games in any round of the playoffs...too much money involved.

Ran some numbers (of course) to see the effect of who's in or out. Later I'll look at matchups and then my proposed playoff system:

2005-06:
Vancouver (92) over Tampa Bay (92)
- Detroit goes East, kicks out Tampa Bay, Vancouver steps in.

2006-07:
Colorado (95) over NY Islanders (92)
- Detroit goes East, kicks out the lowly Isles, Colorado gets in.

2007-08:
Vancouver (88) over Boston (94)
- Detroit goes East, kicks out Boston, and then there's a three-way tie between Edmonton, Chicago, and Vancouver. Near as I can tell, Vancouver would have won the tiebreaker for regulation wins. But the point discrepancy makes it look bad.

2008-09:
Minnesota (89) and Nashville (88) over NY Rangers (95) and Columbus (92)
Okay, a few things going on here:
- Detroit goes East, kicks out the Rangers.
- Columbus going east puts them from their 7th place finish to 11th in the new East. The franchise would not have made the playoffs to date (although playoffs wins would be the same ).
- Minnesota and Nashville take the two Western wildcard spots. This might completely change the Wild franchise as they might hold on to Risebrough and Lemaire. Think about that.

2009-10:
Calgary (90) over Montreal (88)
- Detroit goes East, kicks out Montreal, Calgary and St Louis are tied but Calgary wins the regulation win tiebreaker.
- Remember, this is the playoff that Montreal went to the ECF as an 8th seed.

2010-11:
Dallas (95) over NY Rangers (93)
- Detroit moves East, kicks out NY Rangers.
- This is interesting. Nashville, Chicago, and Dallas would be the 1-2-3 of the Midwest division, although they were 5-8-9 in the Western standings. Dallas as a 9th seed actually wins a divisional playoff spot, not just a wild card. But Phoenix and LA, who were above Chicago and Dallas in the standings, get the wild card spots.
- This also changes those matchups, even if they weren't divisional. Vancouver (1) doesn't face Chicago (8) in the first round.

2011-12:
Calgary (90) over Ottawa (92)
- Detroit moves East, kicks out Ottawa. Calgary gets the last spot.

First Round Bust

Quote:
NHL Needs to Dump their Playoff Proposal and Take Mine

1. Teams and conferences remain the same as the current proposal (per Pierre LeBrun):

Atlantic: CAR - CBJ - NJD - NYI - NYR - PHI - PIT - WSH
Central: BOS - BUF - DET - FLA - MTL - OTT - TBL - TOR
Midwest: CHI - COL - DAL - MIN - NSH - STL - WPG
Pacific: ANA - CGY - EDM - LAK - PHX - SJS - VAN

2. Top three teams in each division are guaranteed a playoff spot.

3. The fourth and fifth teams in each division have a one-game playoff for the divisional wildcard playoff spot.

4. First and second rounds are held within the division, i.e. 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3.

5. First round is best-of-five.

6. Everything else is the same as the current format.

...

For Wild fans, that's potentially THREE more times the Wild make the playoffs (2006, 2009, 2011). You can't tell me you wouldn't want to see the NHL pick up this option.
Click it for the actual matchups. I like it.

Hearing #NHL #NHLPA will soon announce an agreement in principle on realignment. Players appear comfortable enough moving forward.
