Although Ryder is a UFA and Cole has two more years, Cole has mentioned he'd look into retirement pre-lockout. Amnesty possible too.

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun
Further to @TSNBobMcKenzie, the Ryder-Cole trade still awaiting trade call. The Habs also get a draft pick in the deal. Cole waived NTC

What could the reasoning possibly be for sending THEM a pick too!? This dude is 34 and 2 more years, and he's not scoring this year...If his game falls off you're stuck with him at $4 mil two more years.

We get cole for another year after this one

cole is a great example to the young'ns

good 'room' guy

I really, really like Ryder, but would not be upset if this was an even swap. if we end up with a pick as well then it is icing on the cake for me.

I am surprised that we are not getting a Dman in a deal for Ryder, but perhaps there is something else brewing.

I'll take a mostly wait and see approach on this one, but I am not hurting over it like most other seem to be. Is it automatic on this board to poo-poo a trade upon conception? seems that way.

I liked the bolded points a lot.

Perhaps Dallas liked what they saw in goal scoring from Smith and Fraser and decided to bring in a workhorse like player in Cole to play a different role and allow Fraser/Smith to be the shooter.

A guy like Fraser especially can learn a bunch from Cole and it could really help his game grow.

I've always been a Cole fan, and a big part of his decline in MTL, imho, is the offseason and him stating he basically made a mistake signing.

He still has legs and can create space. I think he will play several levels better in DAL than he did in MTL this season.

Ryder played really well in his time w/Dallas. He was a UFA though, so if they got Cole and a pick, I think it's good. Cole will be a guy a lot of teams would want come next years trade deadline, and maybe even this one!

so we've likely traded a producing player who is going to be a ufa for a struggling player who is older and also included a third round pick? ****ing brilliant

Having seen Montreal play on a regular basis, I can assure you that Cole is not a hard working player, at least he hasn't been this year. Of course this could change in Dallas. But if his uninspired lazy play continues, Nieuwendyk will look out to lunch.

love it or hate it. I have to echo sir gary in that it is hilarious watching an over-reactive message board when a trade occurs.

good flippin' times.

@MikeHeika

I'm hearing Ryder and a third round pick for Cole. Cole has this year and two more years at $4 million. Ryder can become UFA
Probably just reporting what MTL reporters are...

This is an odd trade. The 3rd is stupid, but doesn't Dallas have two 3rd rounders?

Oh God, Cole has a NTC too. We are stuck with a 34 yr old for 2 more years?

Edit. Turns ou Cole is only owed 4.0 mil in his final 2 years. His cap hit is 4.5.

Surely he will- however his attitude from the start of the season was negative. He didn't want to play in Montreal.

If this trade happened last season I believe that we would have been happy. Hopefully both teams benefit from the exchange.
