Also I would like to see Gaunce in the NHL and see what he can do at the highest level before getting rid of him.
Agreed. He looked impressive in the AHL last season, so I'd like to give him a look, after all he can't be much worse that the scrubs who are playing right now and we'd know where we're standing with him and his development.

Reason I'm asking is because the Avs have seemingly changed their defensive scheme to a more passive, shot-blocking style. Don't know if that was mandated by the type (i.e., bad) personnel on D, or if this is just the way Quinn teaches it. Either way, I don't like it.
1. Honestly, I can't really remember. My best recollection is that they weren't, but I can't say for sure.

2. Not really. They're more of a chase the other team around the zone team. Aggressive along the boards, pressing the opposing defensemen to move the puck ASAP. One thing the Monsters do fairly well is keep the puck along the boards and under the net in the low-percentage scoring areas. It doesn't really show in their goals against numbers, but they've gotten a lot better in their own zone since November when they were downright terrible.

Anyone know if Hishon is still skating/practicing or did he have another setback?

Good to know. I'm guessing the Avs are blocking shots largely because they're now too damned slow to attack the puck in their own zone, which is sad. Adding a shot-blocker in Zanon probably just made the transition that much easier.

Patterson with a shutout (0-1 SO loss) in his AHL debut. This means all four of our young goalies have played in the AHL this year.

Lerg

So what happened to Bryan Lerg? I guess he's injured or something but I heard the Monsters named Brian Sutherby captain instead? What's that about?

"out for the season" is redundant and implied when saying "injured" as pertaining to Avs and Monsters players.

Monsters had a little fun last night. Definitely needed a game like that. Bill Thomas scored a bad-angle goal on Jeremy Smith and the rout was on from that point. The quick answer to Milwaukee's only goal was big.

Anyway, some observations:

Thomas and van der Gulik have some good chemistry together. Thomas is one of those real savvy AHL players. Tremendous asset for a young team like this one.

Pickard wasn't tested a whole lot. Trying to remember Milwaukee's goal, but I really can't.

First period was incredibly choppy. Very little flow, a lot of offsides whistles, a delay to scrape up some debris from the carpet that they put down in the Zamboni corner for the national anthem. Felt like it took two hours.

Surprisingly, in a 7-1 game, nobody really stood out for either team. The Monsters beat Smith high glove three times. Pock's goal was a textbook PPG with a great screen by Agozzino. Harrison Reed's shot was perfect, right inside the far bar on his goal.

Gaunce played one of his better games. Stollery had a couple nice entries carrying the puck in. Not much from Lauridsen. Was good to see Beaupre stick up for himself at the end of the game, though he didn't carry himself real well in the fight. He didn't back down, so credit for that.

Had to laugh watching Brian McGrattan try to play a skill game for Milwaukee. I don't know if he's trying to reinvent himself or something, but he should probably go back to racking up PIMs.

Don't have a whole lot to say from the game, really. Like I said, nobody stood out for the Monsters or the Admirals one way or another. Smith made a couple nice saves, otherwise the Monsters might have had 10. They just played a solid, team game.

Sgarbossa scored in his first game back with the Monsters. I want to see how he can do in the NHL with linemates other than Bordeleau and Kobasew.

Some movement on the lines but Thomas was with him. The Carey, Malone, Walker line was used a lot. Wonder how well Carey would do with Sgar and Thomas as he's been on fire ever since he was moved into a top 6 roll with quality ice time. Malone is a solid passer but Sgar could get Carey to another level out there.

So after 2, LEM and Milwaukee are tied at 1-1. Sgarbossa has an assist and something else. It looks like he got a 10m misconduct for attempt to injure. I haven't seen any of the game, any of our Monster fans see this?

Slashing/attempt to injure. Could be something that will get him suspended.

Sgarbossa seems so mild mannered in interviews. How is he getting in a fight with Olver, and slashing fools?

He has a real mean streak and can be quite the pest when he wants to be.
