Good point about Desharnais. Kinda forgot that.

I do expect the same. I hope Ryder either takes 71 or 72 but please don't take 37. Ugly number.

Amazing trade. Would have dealt Cole for a 3rd alone.

Looking at the UFA's next year... there are a lot of interesting players. Perry, Getzlaf, Clowe, Semin, Iginla, Horton, Filppula, Clarkson, Murray... Obviously none could be in Montreal next year but it's nice to think we'd have capspace to spend on one of these players.

My dream would be to see Iginla wear a Montreal jersey, even if he's getting older. With a good center, I think he'd be awesome.

How quick have people turned on Cole. He was great for us last year. He had a slow start, but he was getting it going. What can you say, fans here like smallish soft players.

I'm real happy about the return! Despised Cole when he played for the Canes, was ok with him in Montreal. Sucks he couldn't get his stuff together, and wasn't mentally in it, but time to move on.

Come on down Ryder!

This team is not going in the right direction, Cole is a tough gritty player with size forget about current stats. Terrible trade...here we go again.

Cole might bounce back in Dallas, but I honestly think he was close to done here.

Plus, Cole is 34 years old, and so I think some of his diminishing returns might be due to age anyway. Ryder is 2 years younger than Cole, by the way.

Ryder scored 35 goals last year in Dallas, and he currently has 6 goals and 14 points in 19 games. Clearly, he's a good Top 6 scoring winger. He's not as physical as Cole, but he's not downright soft.

In the short-term, Cole for Ryder is pretty close to a wash, I think.

Long-term, this trade is a win for us if either of the following happens...

1) Ryder plays well for us, being a good scoring winger for the top 2 lines, and resigns with us for Cole's cap hit or less. Then the 3rd Rd Pick honestly makes the difference if nothing else does.

2) Ryder leaves in the offseason, and the money we save on the deal is used wisely to acquire an impact forward.

I think this is a good trade for Montreal. Really, it's more than what I thought we'd get for Cole alone.

37 is the 12th prime number, as well as the first irregular prime.

It's nice to have a proactive GM. Many of you are confused because you're used to seeing us taking on contracts and waiting until the player has nothing left and has no trade value. This is how good GM's operate. They create cap and deal away aging assets. When was the last time we did this? The Rivet deal? That turned out pretty well.

I wonder how many of you are still viewing Ryder as the player when he left Montreal. From what I've seen he's grown his game; playing for Jullien probably helped.

I loved 2011-2012 Eric Cole, but his comments during the lockout really surprised me. Hey it's great you love your kids and I'm sure he's a terrific father, but dude 3 more years (including this year) at $4.5 million per year then retirement. Take your kids to school every day! It's a hellva better deal then us working stiffs get with kids!

His game this year was aweful... Terrible decisions with the puck, little passion and I've never seen a "power forward" fall down as much as he did this year! I thought power forwards were supposed to knock the opposing player on their butt!

What sold me was that Cole waived his no trade clause; if he REALLY wanted to stay he would have said "No, I can be better and I'll prove it!"

How Cole rebounds in Dallas is TOTALLY irrelevant. He was not doing it here and at WORST, we are getting rid of a lot of money and get a 3rd round pick in 2013. Even if Cole light it out this year, nothing suggest he will next year and the year after that while we would save some money and have an even more tremendous draft because of that trade.

And that's totally by disregarding Ryder's performance, who will look for it to be great if he wants a big contract.

I like the trade. Good salary dump. Although I doubt we could get him a line of Perry, Galchenyuk and Pacioretty would be AWESOME. Of course Galchenyuk would need a year or two to develop on the 2nd line to be ready for 1st line responsibility, but the thought is nice.

I think this was more about a contract move, and a preemptive one due to two extra years.

This has business decision written all over it. It creates room for the Habs if ever they want to acquire a bigger player before the deadline, or summer with Kaberle probably coming off the cap again.

Ryder has been producing well as of late, so if he can keep it up, it might end up working out for us.
Not to mention we also added to the nice mix of draft picks we have for this summer.
patches dd ryder
Bourque pleks gio
Agally eller bgally
Prust white moen/armstrong

Dd to ryder in slot could be sweet

Cole and Whitney were close golfing buddies here in Raleigh. Maybe he asked to go be reunited with Ray to go play golf?

Like François Gagnon mentions, it makes a lot of $en$e.

Add to that the fact that the Habs will have a total of 6 picks in the 3 first rounds.
