#Flyers will be at risk of a bonus overage penalty for 2013-14 if they continue on LTIR, if Schenn/Couturier achieve performance bonuses.

CapGeek ‏@capgeek
#Flyers already have No. 1 projected payroll for 2013-14 at $62M. An overage would make life difficult under $64.3M cap.

Please explain.

Are you saying that if the flyers have no room on the cap to tack on the schenn couts bonuses they will get moved to next year?

There is no penalty for LTIR itself...just that you can't apply the young guy bonuses to the current cap?

I honestly couldn't explain it. Someone will definitely be able to explain it more but capgeek is very knowledgeable about how all of this works.

We probably should anyway, Bryz/Briere.

Not really. there are quite a few short term options.

He's a decent (but not 5.6 m for 7 more years) goalie.

What if Pronger retires? Does that clear up anything?

Long term? I wouldn't want to commit to any goalie that isn't absolutely elite long term (and Bryz is not elite). Goalies remind me of closers in baseball or even kickers in the NFL. Obviously goalies have a much greater impact on the game, but the performance of individual goalies/closers/kickers can vary wildly from year to year and hot streak to hot streak. Outside of a few elite options (Lundqvist and Rinne, Mariano Rivera, Adam Vinatieri), it's just not smart to commit too much to the position.

Ray Emery. Also wouldn't mind putting in an offer for Bernier from LA, he's an RFA and I really doubt he'll want to resign in LA. Honestly, Bryz has been pretty decent this year, but I really hate that contract with the cap going down.

Backstrom and Smith are the only good options there. I'm far from sold on Emery's rebirth, I wouldn't even consider TT, and I'm honestly not even all that sure about Smith. He and Backstrom will likely be as difficult to acquire as Weber and Suter.

I get your philosophy and it's not a bad one, but when your choices are limited or barely existent, 7 years/5.4 is a whole lot better than Leighton and Boucher.

I like Backstrom a lot, but Smith and Emery should be no and no. Any goalie PHX plugs into their system will be good, and Emery is a product of a great team.

I'm not sure if they addressed the 35 rule in the new CBA for retirement, but under the old CBA this would be a disaster if that happened.

Under the old cba, 35+ contracts who retire count in full against your cap. Yuk.

Don't know if this went away.

However, as before, we can LTIR him each year to get cap relief for his amount of his contract over the upper limit.
