As for the numerous mentions of the Circle Jerks, no way. I love the Jerks, they're one of my favorite punk bands but they sound just like early Black Flag and other LA punk bands of the early 80s.

Bad Brains, **** Sparrer, TSOL, Agent Orange all come to mind.
Public Image Ltd. sounds VERY punk to me.

Wire, Amebix, Discharge, and DRI were mentioned already but I think they were really up there as creative and original punk. Flipper and Neurosis are a couple not mentioned. Antisect and Siege maybe?

If grindcore counts I'd say Repulsion, Napalm Death, and Carcass, for their time.

Maybe Prong's debut EP, Primitive Origins, as far as crossover goes. Fierce riffing on that one.

Unique perhaps in his sound but technically it's just the usual (and even if his voice is unique, many punk bands have unique voices as well). Don't get me wrong, I love NOFX. Went to a couple of festivals just because they were there. But there's been tons of bands like them. Just look at all the Fat Wreck Chords samplers.

Edit: Love their Ska vibes, but that has been done too. Still kicks ass. LOVE their lyrics.

How about Bear vs Shark? Mark Paffi has a unique voice. I really liked their sound, very underrated band.

Feel free to bore me later with overly complicated genre definitions and some good old fashioned condescension.

+1 for Leatherface. So good!

Edit: Listening to Mush now.

I'm a pretty big Hey Mercedes fan and not in any conceivable way would I consider them punk. I don't think I'm using obscure complicated definitions either, they aren't punk.

Edit: BTW, thanks for turning me on to Army of Ponch, really digging their stuff...

You're welcome.

If you consider pop punk related to punk, then they are. They maybe other things too, but if you can't see any conceivable relation to punk or any of its forms, then we will have to agree to disagree.

****ed Up is another good one. David Comes to Life is a great album.
