RT @JayGlazer 49ers have completed a trade w/the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til 3/12. Chiefs made a commitment to Smith.

Per Schefter. SF is getting back the 34th overall pick plus a conditional mid-round pick in 2014.

I think Smith is good, but I don't think he's late first (what this pick essentially is) good.

If Reid can control and use smith like harbaugh did then this could work for him. Still glad to see that kind if a return for him in a solid draft

Edit to my previous post. I typed 33rd pick but that actually belongs to Jacksonville so it would be the 34th pick.

Also that mid-round pick in 2014 could be as a high as a 2nd:

On Alex Smith trade, hearing its worth a maximum of 2 second round picks, depending on his performance. KC's 2nd round in 2013 for certain

I just took a look. Apparently they all decided they wanted Geno Smith to be the QB because they wanted to draft a QB at any cost. The irony of course being Smith is a first overall pick and they don't like him.

What are the conditions for the pick next year??

I don't think a second is terrible for Smith, but two seconds is terrible.

Cassel 2.0

And I understand the anger/frustration of Chief fans.. The franchise hasn't drafted a QB in nearly 30 years in round 1

Its time to take the chance

The only way to justify taking a QB would be to trade down. None of the scrubs in this year's class are worthy of the first overall pick.

Fans are fine trading down ,, But KC fans have been wanting a damn QB in round 1 for years

Could have kept this 34th overall and used it on a QB as well

Just boggles the mind.. Not many teams needed or wanted Alex Smith so the Chiefs IMO didn't have to overpay for him

Taking a QB in the first round just for the sake of it is how you end up with Ponder. Chiefs may have overpaid by a draft round, but they still got a proven starting QB in the league AND still have the first overall pick. Not many teams throughout history can say that.

Reid also makes QB's look better than they are. Look at the returns he got for Kevin Kolb and AJ Feeley.

Yeah, they overpaid, but like Fish said, there's no QB worth a high pick in this draft. They are better off drafting Joeckel and maybe getting Tyler Bray or Landry Jones later. Albert is about to get a big pay day, so if they can replace him and use the money for another upgrade, it'll be much smarter.

Decent value for both San Fran and KC Chiefs. Noone should be surprised that he went for a 2nd+. That's close to or right at market value for a QB of Smith's abilities.

Need to start figuring out who's going to be expendable in three years to find out who the Chiefs will trade their 2015 second-rounder for.

Moronic move by the Chiefs. If they didn't think Geno was the real deal, just take Joeckel and suck for the year without giving up two picks for a guy similar to what you already have.

How are Smith and Cassel remotely similar? Cassel turns the ball over every chance he gets. Smith never turns the ball over. Smith is in the Aaron Rodgers class of not turning the ball over.

They wouldn't just suck for next year. They would suck for at least another 2 or 3 seasons (development), and more depending if they can find a good QB in the draft, which is incredibly difficult. Last year was an anomaly in terms of drafting a QB.

While KC's poor history of drafting likely means that there won't be enough talent to surround Smith with, that in itself doesn't mean it's a bad trade. Had they not made this trade, maybe they'd hit on one of those two picks ( at a non-QB position) and they would still be stuck in the same position had they traded for Smith, still being a bad team. It's arguable that even with two very good players at non-QB positions, they would still be a bad team.

There's no harm in making this move. At worse, it's a different way to suck, but in the end, they would still stink either way.

Chiefs needed a QB but that's a lot to give up for Alex Smith. I thought it would have been a third round pick at most. But he's a good QB who will help them win some games if they give him some weapons on offense. Also, please stop comparing Smith to Cassel, you're just making yourself look bad with comments like that.

Great trade for the 49ers. They have a lot of picks now and will be able to improve the team through the draft or by making a trade. I've already seen some Revis and Harvin speculation on twitter.
