I don't think Coyle will miss any games. At most a stern warning.

HAHAHA you are kidding right?

Clear upward movement on Stajan by Coyle, he could have made a horizontal hit to his chest but instead made an upward motion to hit him in the face.

You Wild fans are hilarious.

As for my opinion on the hit; it certainly was late, was high (taking into account players' relative heights or not), and was a penalty. Wouldn't disagree with any of that. As far as further discipline, wouldn't be shocked with a game or two. It's probably the correct call given how it was viewed in the official's eyes. However, I do agree with the above poster that even if all of the above stated are true, there should be a bit of an onus on the player to protect himself for a hit that is clearly coming.
Not if you don't have the puck. It was a pretty late hit.

Looked like accidental contact and Stajan was fine won't be much of a punishment

Yeah, turn sideways so you can get completely blown up and get smacked into next year by the hit.

Maybe Stajan should have moved to the side and stuck out his knee. Or raised his hands while holding the stick. Good hockey plays.

Cheers,

This was a retaliatory hit on Coyle's part due to some funny business earlier with Stajan. Not to justify it, and I wouldn't be surprised if Charlie got a spanking from Shanny...maybe 1 game.

I do think Stajan should win an Oscar for his performance after the hit, however.

And there was no injury on the play, and Coyle is not a repeat offender. That matters too.

No suspension.

Quote:
Rookie Charlie Coyle will not be suspended by the NHL for his “elbowing” major on Matt Stajan in last night’s 2-1 overtime victory over Calgary, sources say.
Quote:
Some were saying on Twitter last night that the check was a perfect example of Rule 48 – Illegal Check to the Head. But as is explicitly written in Rule 48 (a rule that some hockey writers have trouble grasping despite its adoption two years ago), the head must be BOTH targeted AND the principal point of contact.

According to the video, the principal point of contact in this case appeared to be Coyle’s shoulder to Stajan’s upper chest. While there is significant contact to Stajan’s chin after the fact, Coyle doesn’t go out of his way to hit the head and makes a full body check – two criteria the league uses when determining discipline.

While the hit may have been late, that alone is not grounds for suspension.

That's a good news.

Good to see the league called Coyle though.

Like I said, he didn't target the head, the size difference and Stajan embellishing made it look worse than it was.

Your comparison using a guy who came out 10 minutes later and was fine for the rest of the game to a guy who is now on injured reserve, really nails your whole point

I am sure the hit did hurt pretty bad...

Coyle got a 5 min major, and I have no problem with that, hits like that should not be allowed.

He should get no additional punishment however.

Correct ruling IMO. He gets warned and if he does it again then action will be taken. I would have been ok with a fine at the most. Dumb late hit but there was no intent to injure IMO.

Wild fans never actually really saw the hit from their feed. They had been fed that the call was terrible and Stajan was diving before they saw the Sportsnet feed, some going so far as saying he wasn't hit. First impressions last and that's why a couple of their fans are sticking with Stajan dived. That's the only reason I can see why people would claim someone getting hit in the head by a 210 pound rookie, going to the locker room for the remainder of the period while bleeding could call it embellishment.

I'm fine with no suspension, although I believe Coyle should have got the misconduct during the game.

Coyle's not a defenseman, and Stajan wasn't bleeding.

Oops, my bad. But Stajan was bleeding, Sportsnet reported on it in the locker room a couple times.

Landeskog came back and played the rest of the game then was put on IR.

The difference is Stajan isn't injured, and definitely isn't on IR.
