Don't people watch the games anymore? Ryder is a streaky dude who was a third liner in the last few years except last year. Cole remains a power forward that plays on the first two lines and scored 35 goals last year.

Good deal for the Habs. Cole is terrible. He can now go preach about the "fearsome" CBA in Dallas.
This was all Gainey, as a "consultant". Cole could not live up to his contact anymore this year. We also get on top of this a third...thanks Bob! Hearing Bergevin talking about this as a "hockey trade" just made me laugh.

Cole could not produce anymore no matter who he played with, this with a 1st place team. Even if you would be right about Ryder (14 points so far is very good) he has got 28 games left on his contract, while Cole has two more years after that, for 4.5M hit/year. If Ryder does not produce, we really do not care as we will have plenty of cap space and plenty of upcoming kids such to fill in the role, for which Cole would have taken their place. Ryder is also 2 years younger than Cole.

This trade was strictly administrative...can't believe we also get a third pick.

No, they traded a player who cannot produce anymore to the level of his contract, and would have been a burden both from from a cap and a team development perspective as he would have taken the place next year of an excellent prospect. Habs get rid of a non-producing forward at the tail of his career and most importantly his cap space, in exchange for a still-producing forward at the tail of his career that bears no cap space for next year.

This trade was strictly business.

Ya people said the same garbage when Cole first signed with the habs, then he went and scored 35 goals. You can feed yourself whatever **** you want to there is nothing to suggest this is anything less than Coles usual slow start. Habs also have no "excellent prospects" graduating next year at his position, how ridiculous.

If MB doesn't do anything with that extra cap this was an unnecessary move.

I wonder what value Ryder would have to a contending team in need of a sniper with play-off experience. I'm not saying we should do that but what would Dallas have gotten for him in the line of a draft pick. A second or late first maybe?

Seriously, it's insane how many Habs fans have this unfounded belief that Gainey runs things in Dallas. Talk about delusional.

Pretty sure they are being sarcastic. Logic being: bad trade = Gainey.

Cap is going down, I wouldn't say we necessarily have 'extra cap'. We would've had 8 mil next summer to do the following:

Re-sign DD. 2.5-3.5 mil I guess?
Re-sign White .8-1 mil
Sign bottom 6 player or use young guy .9 mil to 1.5
Sign depth D or use young guy(weber) .9 mil to 1.5
Sign backup G 1-1.5 mil

Even a little tight, this is 13Fwds, 7D and 2G.

Habs now have 12.7 mil, much more to work with. In addition a kaberle buyout may give us additional space if necessary for a splash.

I here St.Louis is looking at Briere. A cheaper option may be Ryder. Something around Polak. You know that crease clearing defenseman we need. People make this deal look like Ryder has no valu where he is a valuable asset. Keep up the good work Bergevin. Between now and next years deadline Kaberle, Gionta and Markov will probalbly be going. Plekanac maybe to if some team steps up with a knock your socks off offer.

I hope MB will do something usefull with the cap space this summer. Otherwise habs will be short with this trade. Yesterday Ryder i saw the same perimiter player he was 5 years ago. Will give him more time but as of right now i'm not very enthousiam about him. He is a floater with a shot.

One game. 2-3 hours of sleep. New team. New system. No practices with new team.

Ya, he sucks, trade him for 7th.

If you could only conceive of how much damage Gainey did to our organization after his first two seasons. His legendary legacy is dimming by the day - most of the fanbase feels betrayed by his complete lack of proactivity or foresight.

That said, I've always maintained that Niewy is a horrible GM and finally some people are seeing the light. Dallas is floundering and it's because of Niewy.

And you're neglecting to account for cap flexibility, which will be at a premium next year.

You're a master at that "If" game.

And this time you're neglecting Ryder's possible (two can play the "if" game) contribution this year and in the (possible ) playoffs.

Have another go at it...
