Scouting report on this guy?

4 NHL points, I'm guessing he's a brawler?

Pretty good fighter. Can chip in the occasional point if he gets very lucky. Decent at laying the body and not terrible defensively compared to some fighters.

That's about it.

Bye-bye Peppermint Patty.

Not sure if I have any strong feelings about losing him.

He has a ridiculous one punch:

6'0, 215lbs so he's very built. He usually lays the body and makes one HUGE hit every couple games.

Don't expect him to chip in offensively, he will get the occasional point.

At least this guy sounds like he will finish a check. The caps are soft.

With the addition of Volpatti, the Caps now have 6 guys of the 23 making less than $1M who will be UFA at the end of their contract: Volpatti, Hillen, Fehr, Wolski, Crabb, Beagle.

Nice pick up for the Caps. He is a very servicable 4th liner.

Thanks for the season, Aaron V.

Good move for the Caps. They add more grit to their lineup.

I like it in the sense it adds some balls to the line-up and pushes Crabb to the bench. I don't like it in the sense it doesn't solve many of the more pertinent issues with the team. Volpatti isn't going to keeping people from running over Green or Perreault.

That's because having a fighter doesn't protect players. However, Volpatti is a solid 4th liner who can fight, rather than just being a fighter. Decent wheels, solid positionally and decent defensively, along with the hitting and fighting that's been mentioned. Wouldn't have thought that a year ago, but he's really had a good showing this year.

Hes one of those 4th liners who doesn't look out of place playing 10 minutes a night

I'm somewhat happy to see him go. Weiss is the superior hockey play (though I have to admit Volpatti has an excellent shooting sense - knows how to take dangerous shots quickly and never gets fancy). I thought he was one of the Canucks slowest players but had the positional sense to make it work.

He was defintely our hardest checker though at times I found it disappointing that he didn't seem to know when to hold back physically - causing smooth games to become chippier when it would have been wiser (for the rest of the Canucks) to continue a more skill based game.

All in all agood 4th liner but IMO a better fit on a physical team like the Ducks or Bruins.

Any confirmation on why he was waived?

****.

Well, at least I like Washington as a team. Volpatti, all the best, do for them what you did for us.

Sad to see him go, but he wasn't getting ice time, and Weise being able to play on the PK made Volpatti redundant. He's a good middleweight fighter, he hits, skates and his offensive accumen isn't bad, but don't expect points with any regularity. He can be in the right place at the right time, but he rarely closes the deal.

There had better be a reason for this.

The only thing that matters is ... what does Troy Brouwer think of this?
