But honestly, I'd rather talk about the possibility of Ovechkin coming here than O'Reilly.
Kovalchuk has adapted to the Devils/Deboer system. I think Ovechkin would be a lethal weapon in the Canadiens attack and I think he'd come in ripe for an attitude change. The Caps would need to retain at least $2m cap hit on his contract before I would pull the trigger.
Bringin Ovi on to the squad would be a complete reversal of the "Team First" philosophy that has been instilled on the guys since the beginning of the season.
I'm one of the minority here in that I actually like Ovi and hope he does well....just not on the Montreal Canadiens.
I agree with everything here. As well, having him playing the way we know he can is just good for the league. I just don't think he fits here.
The caps would retain 3M$ from his salary, i'd centemplate it.
But no coaches have been able to wake the bear from his slumber, Millbury is an idiot but the play where he make a change on a goal was realy pee-wee level hockey.
But i doubt the caps would just give him away for cap relief, we'd have to send something substantial return.
If he has become just a 6''4 Ryder, that still worth a lot of money and assets in this league.
Strickly hockey speaking, it could work because Ovy would arrive in a team with a system and wouldn't be the key part around which the team was built. It even could be excatly what he needs to start contributing like a star player again.

Yes he's under-performing, but I think he needs a change of teams and by doing that he might rebound, I'm not sure the habs would be the right candidate though.

The guy's worst goal output was 32 goals and he made 85 points.
His worst point output was 65 points but he made 38 goals.
These are CLEARLY first line numbers but still not his 100 point performance numbers.
Honestly, I'd do it if they take Gionta, Desharnais/Eller, 1st and a random B level prospect and call it a day...but they won't.
If they retain say 2 mil in salary it becomes even more attractive for us.
Now, as for ovechkin in montreal. I think many will love him, praise him but when he sucks he will get it. The guy won't have anywhere to hide and will have to be more accountable. Of course, he could always sulk and fade into nothingness but I think first is more likely.
I'm not saying habs is a place where players shine but I think he can be one who does. He's amazing and would bring physicality into top 6.

The next Yashin. Those long term contracts are killers.
Ovechkin is twice the player Yashin is, and this is coming from a long time Ovechkin critic.
Ovie is an extremely stupid player but Yashin was too slow for the modern NHL. Ovie's contract already looks awful but on a better team he could still be a PPG player.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I would rather have Semin or Kessel. I think they're more coachable than OV and could be "convinced" to play some defense in our system. And, in the case of Semin, we get a decent penalty killer too.

As with anything, depends on the cost. I'd view moving Subban, Price or Galchenyuk as poor choices. Them aside, Ovechkin would be a tremendous addition.
