Lottery team? Debatable .. Currently it'd be a top 10 pick for the Av's

In this deep draft, if I'm Colorado I take the picks .. Two top 10 picks in this draft class, holy **** they can turn things around really quickly

They can match right away, but they have a week to answer IIRC.

What's the most the Avs can get? 1st and a 3rd? Or 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Not sure what the offer is exactly. The actual $ amount.

Wow, didn't even consider the Flames a candidate but it really makes perfect sense for them.

I'm glad the saga is finally coming to an end. No way I match that if I'm Colorado; take the 1st and 3rd and run.

That's pretty much Feaster's ass on the line with this move, no draft picks in the 3 first rounds is brutal maybe they will get some back by trading Iginla.

Yeah they said the same thing with Kessel and how much he would've improved the club.

If we match we get our player back, if we don't we get a high 1st rounder. IMO I think we should match just because it is risk, Boston just got lucky IMO.

1st and 3rd in 2013. Habs own the Flames 2nd in 2013 anyway.

Ryan O'Reilly has signed the #flames offer sheet. Compensation to #avs is a first- and third-round pick if they don't match.

they technically can't "decline" anything. he signed an offer sheet with the Flames. they have a certain amount of time to match the offer or not match it. if they choose not to match the offer sheet, they send him to the Flames and they get compensatory picks.

What would be the compensation to Colorado?

Edit - a few posts up.

In terms of real value, this is a lot bigger than a $5M per deal.

Consider that his salary for this year includes a $2.5M signing bonus even though there are only 30 games left in Colorado's season. So, he will be paid $2.5M + 30/82*$1,000,000 = about $2,900,000 in actual money to be paid. Making $2.9M for 30 games is the equivalent of making close to $8M over an 82 game season.

Colorado isn't a cap team, there seems to be an internal budget. Can they afford to pay ROR this much?

A week ago they were in the bottom five? That's a lottery team. It's going to be at least a top 10 pick.

They can match the offer and keep him. If they decline they lose him and get CGY 1st and 3rd.

Nope, but I hate Calgary so it's a bit disappointing. Didn't expect/want him for NYR just thought he might go to a team I enjoy watching like Buffalo or something.

well, CGY certainly fits as a team that needs a center. Very calgary-ownership move to prefer something like this over drafting and waiting.

2.5M signing bonus for playing 25 games is certainly going to piss off the avs a bit if they match.

he's 22, so he'll still be an RFA when this deal is done, but again, avs will be pissed off with such a high (6.5M) qualifying offer. If they do match, look for him to be traded next trade deadline.

Signing ROR and giving away their first in this year's draft is a "go-for-it" move .. Iggy won't be moved now

Colorado Avalanche RFA Ryan O'Reilly has signed the Calgary Flames offer sheet of 2 years worth $10M(Year 2: $6.5M)! The compensation going to the Avalanche is a 1st round and 3rd round draft pick if they do not match, which they won't.

Decline it and give them ROR, take the picks.

You're looking at getting TWO top 10 picks in the draft, picking up a guy like Monahan, Lindholm, Barkov, maybe nichuskin, potentially a bottom 5 pick even.

Not counting Colorado's pick as well, so you could have yourself two top 10 picks for a team that's already deep in youth, and they would be on much cheaper contracts.

Dumb move by Calgary IMO, good player but he wont bring that much to the team to be worth that top 10 pick in this years deep draft.

Where is Burke to grumble about how the Flames are ruining the salary structure of the NHL?

He already accepted it. Can't file an offer sheet without the player's signature.
