The Flames are going to be a #1 pick somewhere between 15 and 25 I suspect, so the first round pick doesn't hold a ton of value, especially as the Avs have their own pick.
I think the Avs would be crazy to not match the offer. They can save face by saying they didn't feel giving up O'Reilly for picks was enough of a return and that they understand offer sheets are part of the possibilities but they are matching and they're glad to have the issue behind them and have Ryan as part of the team for years to come...
I just wanted to check what the Avs fan reactions are here - and I'm surprised everyone's saying match. I immediately thought, "screw that, he can walk if I'm Sherman", that first round pick is going to yield a fantastic player and could end up being top 5.
Not to mention the third - it's a deep draft - and the fact that IMO O'reilly just isn't worth 5 million bucks in this cap environment. Particularly not on a 2 year deal, where the 6.5 million second year forms the basis for any subsequent arbitration award.
I don't see how you guys aren't saying "best of luck in your future endeavours".
If the 1st is top 10, then we could really come out ahead. If the 1st is ~15, we could really lose. I think there is too much risk involved in letting him go. Suck it up and match. If you still don't like him next year he will have value on the trade market (at least a 1st to somebody).
Now when Sven Bartschi comes up as a RFA I want us to sign him to a mega deal.
Our Collective Board's Rep just took a major hit on the Trade Forum...a number of us were saying that he wouldn't sign an OS...lol

I really don't think we will match. There has just been too much bad blood around here. Take the picks and move on. And do everything in our power to beat Calgary every time we can. Hell, there is an outside chance we get the top 2 picks this year.
