For me, this decision really revolves around how sour the relationship truly is. If they think they can patch it up...match. If it's gone too far south...take a gamble and hope to get a top 10 pick.

Either way I'm happy something is happening here.

Keep in mind the new draft lottery, you guys could have two cances at first overall.

The Flames are going to be a #1 pick somewhere between 15 and 25 I suspect, so the first round pick doesn't hold a ton of value, especially as the Avs have their own pick.

I think the Avs would be crazy to not match the offer. They can save face by saying they didn't feel giving up O'Reilly for picks was enough of a return and that they understand offer sheets are part of the possibilities but they are matching and they're glad to have the issue behind them and have Ryan as part of the team for years to come...

No. It's $6.5M. You only need to match salary over a certain limit.

I had the feeling that if he didn't sign any offer sheet, he did not want to come back to us. Considering he did shows that he sort of cares about this organization in a very strange way.

I... am... shocked.

So sorry, guys.

I was told by the man himself that this wasn't even an option, but I guess the 5m per offer did make him commit.

Don't know what to say, will try to talk to him sometime this week.

I just wanted to check what the Avs fan reactions are here - and I'm surprised everyone's saying match. I immediately thought, "screw that, he can walk if I'm Sherman", that first round pick is going to yield a fantastic player and could end up being top 5.

Not to mention the third - it's a deep draft - and the fact that IMO O'reilly just isn't worth 5 million bucks in this cap environment. Particularly not on a 2 year deal, where the 6.5 million second year forms the basis for any subsequent arbitration award.

I don't see how you guys aren't saying "best of luck in your future endeavours".

I believe compensation is a 1st and 3rd. Av's won't like the $6.5 2nd year as that becomes O'Reilly's Q.O.

Here is the dealbreaker. Goodbye Ryan.

If the 1st is top 10, then we could really come out ahead. If the 1st is ~15, we could really lose. I think there is too much risk involved in letting him go. Suck it up and match. If you still don't like him next year he will have value on the trade market (at least a 1st to somebody).

Now when Sven Bartschi comes up as a RFA I want us to sign him to a mega deal.

Our Collective Board's Rep just took a major hit on the Trade Forum...a number of us were saying that he wouldn't sign an OS...lol

I just think he's worth way more than the picks we'd get.

Here's something to think about.

What about some of the offers the Avs had on the table? Who knows what they left out there if they were waiting for maximum value? Possibly more value than a first or third.

Match and move on. You don't let him go to a division rival for a 1st and a 3rd.

That 6.5M qualifying offer is what screws this up. That's insane. Flames are run by morons. Have fun paying him that much in two years.

I really don't think we will match. There has just been too much bad blood around here. Take the picks and move on. And do everything in our power to beat Calgary every time we can. Hell, there is an outside chance we get the top 2 picks this year.

Next question, who are the upcoming RFA's for Calgary. Greg from accouting needs to start plotting revenge. Divisional rival pulling a stunt like that should cause for whip lash for CGY.

Let's put this in perspective. Would you rather have ROR for 6.5 or Stastny for 6 in two years?

Agreed. The compensation isn't enough for O'Reilly, but with what he's being offered and everything that has thus far transpired there's not a whole lot of incentive to match, either.

Personally, I'm pretty sure they let him walk, but I wouldn't put money on it.

EJ Hradek (FWIW) says Sherman should let him walk.

That's what's been stated by several, including Dreger himself, who's had NHL GM's tell him the same.
