There are more factors involved. This would force Avs to give him a QO of $6.5M next summer. That's is insane.

Is there a window to trade him after next season and before they have to give him a qualifying offer?

I wonder if they waited this long on purpose. Last year's trade deadline was February 27th and we won't be able to trade him for an entire year from the day it's matched. So next year's deadline will pass and they'll have to qualify him at $6.5M unless they trade him after the season.

Calgary won't tank with O'Reilly in the lineup.

If Avs match or not depends on if they think there is any chance of O'Reilly re-signing next summer for $5M-5.5M or if he's all about the money.

I have no doubt the relationship can be patched up. Hell it would be surprising if O'Reilly would prefer Calgary over Colorado long term. Calgary's future looks terrible.

Well, it's ROR for 6.5 and whatever small return we get for Stastny or Stastny for 6 for 2 years and a top 10 pick. I think I would rather the latter.

Does this offer sheet change his UFA status? I was under the impression that ROR was a UFA in 4 years (this year + 3 more), but people on the main board are saying he'd be a UFA once this offer is up. Any clarification would help.

If his UFA status doesn't change, I think we match. Yes it's a steep 6.5M next year for our cheap owners, and negotiations will be difficult with that kind of qualifying offer, but with ROR Calgary's pick isn't guaranteed to be top 10. Plus we still have the opportunity to trade him in 1 year from now, and can potentially get a much better return. Not to mention that he gives us a much better chance at making the playoffs and the best case scenario is to have him on this team for years to come. I know they didn't want to pay him 5M per, but at only 2 years it's not much risk.

Not to mention he would be going to the Flames, who we would have to play several times per year.

EDIT: Just because his Q.O. is 6.5M doesn't mean that's what we have to sign him for after the deal is done, it just gives him more leverage in negotiations. If he isn't happy with the offer he will just take his QO but that is only for 1 year. It would be much better to have a longer term deal with a smaller cap hit, one would think (for job security) unless he does want to be UFA really soon.

What are the percentage chances of CGY's 1st becoming 1st overall if they finished say with the 9th pick.

Not if they can soothe the hurt feelings and work out a long term deal before that becomes an issue. I can see why that'd give them pause, but not enough to just let him go for a 1st and a 3rd.

I kind of wanted an offer sheet so this madness could end but that offer is insane, especially the 2nd year.

So sorry, guys.

I was told by the man himself that this wasn't even an option, but I guess the 5m per offer did make him commit.

Don't know what to say, will try to talk to him sometime this week.
The guy would be stupid to not sign that contract.

Someone on the trade board called this a "poison pill" and I tend to agree that's what this is for the Avs.

The $6.5 million is way too high for accounting to match. If they match, they've basically caved into O'Reilly's camp...giving him a better deal than they could have ever negotiated. He gets paid AND he gets to be an UFA most likely in 2 seasons.

If we don't match, we get totally screwed on compensation, more than likely. I'm not buying the Flames as a Top 3 pick...they are the definition of mediocre but they always finish in that 10-15 range and if they are going to follow this up with more deals, we could be looking at a #15 type pick. That is terrible compensation.

Hard to see a real optimistic view unless you take the tact that the Flames are going to be laughably bad the rest of the season.

They did that so Avs wouldn't match.

Now Avs have to think if ROR is worth more than a risky top 5-15 pick.

i wonder what the avalanche locker room will be like if he comes back...prob pretty awkward seeing as how this guy abandoned his team

Two options now.

1) Match it. And trade Stastny.

2) Don't match it and Duchen and Stastny is our one two punch at center for the next decade or so.

They'll match i think dont see how theyll let him go to a division rival. If they dont match then whatever the team I wanted to get traded to was the flames. So win-win for me.

I'd match and than trade him. I believe there's a team willing to beat a 1st and 3nd for him. agree to a trade before matching.

That too, but greed is a huge factor. I hope Duchene scores 3 tonight and sticks it to O'Reilly

It shouldn't, as far as I know. He would be an RFA at the end of that contract (and watch him net 20 points next year and hold out for league max
