Thanks Calgary, if true!
I don't think it would be reported like it has been if it was only offered and not signed.

Regardless, if ROR is in a Flames jersey next time he plays in the Can, it better be a tonne of boo's every time he steps foot on the ice.

Absolutely hate the guy right now, regardless of whether he comes back or not.

He will be as hated as Cutler is in Denver. I'm buying tickets to that game.

Because if he goes to FA he wouldn't get that contract either if the Avs won't offer it up?

If we take him to arbitration and we then let him walk, we may match any contract below 20% of his arbitration salary as well. Aka, 5.3+ mil if we let him walk and less than 5.3 we can retain him.

Yes...now match the freaking thing. A first from the Flamers wont mean much this season its prolly gonna be in the 15th-25 range.

Bingo.

Not to mention how akward the situation would be in the locker room.

I think theres only one play here to make, and thats take the picks and hope Calgary gets crushed every game.

Former Avalanche executive Michel Goulet, who is now working with the Flames, played a large part in the deal. Goulet is a Hockey Hall of Famer who spent the majority of his playing career with the Quebec Nordiques.

Goulet was fired by Avs president Pierre Lacroix in 2009. Goulet was in line to succeed Francois Giguere, who was fired as Colorado's general manager earlier in 2009, but Lacroix instead hired current general manager Greg Sherman.

Goulet gets his revenge.

I think Chambers is just trying to start some more ****

As of right this moment, Avs and FLames would have 6th and 8th overall picks respectively.

If the Flames pick stayed 8th overall, I would be fine with that, but theres no way adding ROR makes them any worse then they are, and it will make them better, that pick is gonna end up at worst in the 12th range.

So sorry, guys.

I was told by the man himself that this wasn't even an option, but I guess the 5m per offer did make him commit.

Don't know what to say, will try to talk to him sometime this week.

We can't match man .

QO comes up same time as Varly, Landy and Dutchy's contracts expire.

So would he be a rfa with Calgary in two years? Would they have to qualify at $6.5?

When a RFA's contract expires, you have to give him a qualifying offer (1 year contract, with the same salary as the final year of his last contract) in order to keep him an RFA. Most players don't sign it. And waits for the longer contract. Like what happend last summer with Downie and the other. And Muellers QO was too high. It would have been higher than his Free Agency value.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Ugh sorry to hear about this. You guys are one of my favorite teams outside of St. Louis.

Hope it backfires on Calgary either way.

Players like that pretty much never reach UFA, especially since they are on good teams.

Let him walk and take the picks. The q.o in the 3rd year makes this a terrible contract for the Avs in the future. Remember, you could also trade the picks to a team for some help where you need it.

This is not good value for him, yet there is no way Colorado is matching. Despite it being a deep draft this year people still need to remember the draft is a crapshoot. If the 09 draft was re-done today, ROR would prolly be going 2nd or 3rd overall. Even though he was drafted in the second round, it's not fair to characterize him as "just a second rounder". He could very well turn out to be a franchise player. And just because someone is a lottery pick doesn't mean they will automatically be stars in this league. Would anyone take Erik Johnson first overall in 06 if the draft were re-done? Heck no. I would much rather have Mr. Second Round Pick than EJ. Lets put it this way, if you could look into a crystal ball ahead of any draft and learned what we know NOW about what kind of player ROR is, you would take him top 3 because he's a lock.

So yes, it could be that this first rounder may end up being better than ROR. But the odds say that is unlikely. The killer would be the QO. If ROR does not improve upon his production it would be tough to pay that kind of money. But we have so much darned cap space, that if I were GM I would match. It could be an albatross of a contract, or it could be the best decision I ever made.
