Just my speculation, but I think he probably meant saying he'd thought about killing himself but now that it's out there doesn't want people talking about that and was probably told by his agent it doesn't help him get onto another team. For me, to even have it come up in an interview means he's thought about it as I don't think it would randomly pop into his head to make a funny.

Remember like 5 years ago when the fans at Nassau chanted ''DP! DP! DP! DP!'' ?

Kovy does not like realignment. Good man.

Quote:
“We just talked about it yesterday in our PA meeting,” Kovalchuk said today. “For us, I don’t think it makes any sense to change it. We have a great division and good travel for all the teams in our divisions. There’s a lot of rivalry games. Overall, I don’t think 16 teams on our side (conference) and 14 teams (in the West), I don’t think it’s really how it should be.

“And those wild cards, I don’t think it makes too much sense. Hockey should stay hockey. It doesn’t have to become football.”
Quote:
“They’ve got to change Winnipeg. They can’t stay in the Southeast Division,” Kovalchuk said. “I think if they just switch Detroit or Nashville or somebody, that would be it. Because everything is working … To me, I think they should just keep it the way it is.”

I agree with Kovy that the wildcards are dumb, at least Devs26 was right with no playin games...yet, and it is good for us.

Except the current style is never going to last with the West's schedule the way that it is. Add in the findings of Ambien in players due to time differences and you have every effort to try and make as many games in 1 time zone as you can possibly make. I mean it isn't fair that we play in say Boston twice a year and CBJ has to play in SJ twice a year.

Breaking: Told thhe Flames have filed an offer sheet on Ryan O'Reilly.

$5M cap hit for 2 years. Pretty short term contract to have to give up 2 1st's, a 2nd and a 3rd. Granted he'll still be RFA but who knows if he pulls the same **** on the Flames in 2 years? If I'm the Avs, I'd let him walk. This year's Flames 1st is going to be a strong pick, even with O'Reilly joining CGY.

2nd year is $6.5M. So O'Reilly is guaranteed to make $6.5M+ on his next contract.

Stupid move by the Flames.

EDIT: I am mistaken. The compensation is a 1st and a 3rd. I misread the compensation charts. So not bad as far as "trade" value. Still, that contract.

Thought Deadspin kind of laid this out nicely. Don't feel bad for the jokes because DP is sad. Jokes about the contract aren't really about him, but more how much of an idiot Wang is for offering it. So if you for some reason you feel bad about making fun of DiPetro...well make fun of Wang a little harder.

Perfect for Colorado.
The Avs have so many holes in their roster with no real pieces to move to plug them in.
Those draft picks will make some great trade bait to boost their current roster.

And Feaster, the guy with the team in most need of a rebuild, is willing to cough up draft picks? I don't understand.

It's a good move for them if they get him. It's not like their recent draft history has been that stellar anyway. COL is rebuilding anyway, take the picks and run. Get yourself out of that ugly mess. Not sure any other team is going offer them a better trade package knowing that they have very little leverage at this point.

Backwards logic re the draft picks. O'Reilly's a nice player. But not worth $5M now and certainly won't be worth $6.5M+ in two years.

That Flames trade makes no sense. Why didn't they just pick up McGratten when he was put on waivers? And now all those draft picks for O'Reilly? What is Feaster doing?

Not sure of their situation, but they could be close to or at the max amount of contracts allowed in a system. Trading a non impact player keeps a contract spot open.

Also, I'm not 100% sure how waivers works but I was under the impression there is some kind of luxury tax on claiming players.

So, good "trade" value for O'Reilly. But that's a terrible contract. If the Flames get O'Reilly they'll be screwed when they have to pay him at least $6.5M in 2 years. And the Avs are screwed even worse. Either match an awful contract, or take less than they could have gotten in trade. Sherman blew it on this one. Still, if I'm the Avs, I let him walk. Flames pick is going to be top 10, maybe even top 5 this year. O'Reilly isn't turning CGY around this year after sitting out half a season. Best thing COL can do is make ROR and CGY twist in the wind for a week before walking away.

So DP says he had considered suicide, then said he was joking, then says "I was just trying to draw attention to how important my wife has been to me". I used to feel bad for DP, now I just think he's a jackass. Go cry yourself to sleep in your pile of money, you *****.

They just wanted to dump a contract if they were bringing on McGrattan. If I read it correctly, they were at 49 and wouldn't have been able to offer sheet O'Reilly if they were at 50.

Making it 6.5 the second year is pretty ugly, but that might just be a mechanism to make sure Colorado doesn't match. If it doesn't get matched, O'Reilly could negotiate a longer term deal (on his next deal) that doesn't necessarily have to start at 6.5.

Feaster still reminds me of that guy in your fantasy league that got lucky and won 10 years ago. I suppose he's under pressure to win now by their ownership. If Colorado doesn't match, that draft pick still looks to be in the #7-14 range. O'Reilly is still young, so it's not the worst swap. In that range, the pick is looking more like Zadorov/Nurse/Shinkaruk and possibly Nichushkin if the Russian Factor comes into play. Those guys are likely a couple years away from contributing.

I'd let Calgary take him...that one's probably going to be pretty high this year. It could be a mini-Kessel deal lol

A very aggressive move by the Flames. However, other GM's suggest Colorado could have fetched more than a 1st and 3rd via trade.
Tough spot for Colorado, but they seem to have bungled this negotiation as well. Unless they changed the rule in this CBA, Colorado can't trade O'Reilly until next season if they choose to match.

Sorry, I was also misunderstanding how many/which draft picks were up for grabs with this OS.
If it's just a 1st and a 3rd, it's more than worth it for Calgary who is inexplicably in win now mode at all times.

The real sticking point is convincing O'Reilly not to pull the same stunt again when he's back up as an RFA 2 years from now. Considering Calgary does not look to break away from being mediocre anytime soon.. I'm not so sure that they can.

Colorado could have definitely gotten a better deal for O'Reilly, and from perusing the comments from some of the bigger analysts over the past few weeks, there definitely seemed to be better deals on the table than a 1st and 3rd.

It's tough, Calgary's been floating anywhere from #5-10. With O'Reilly (and assuming Kiprusoff comes back), they probably would be in the 10-15 range. In that range, you might only get a decent prospect who's a few years away from helping your club.

For me, the blue chippers right now are Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, and Barkov. Nichushkin and Nurse seem to be trending upwards, and there are solid prospects with Monahan, Lindholm, and Zadorov. Outside of those guys, I'm not sure who else I would feel alright about getting for O'Reilly.

dumb trade imo, especially since he'll be a UFA after next season. If Calgary was a playoff team then I would like this trade
