O'Reilly is an absolute wizard. How did he make this happen for himself?

We will know the first time the ROR plays the Avs.

He could agree to a long term deal for less than $6.5M/yr with a team he actually wants to play for. Don't know if the value we get back would be more than a 1st and 3rd round pick though.

If I were O'Reilly I'd take my 6.5 over the next 4 years then retire somewhere warm.

I know. It is the exact same money. I make that move 10/10. Sherman won't.

I'm pissed right now.

Just don't see any reason to match that. 6.5m QO? No thank you. He'd ask for 8m/yr and holdout again.

Revised best case scenario:

Avs take the pick, end up with the two top 3 picks and walks away with two of MacKinnon, Drouin and Jones. O'Reilly returns to being a 20-30 point player.

A gust just blew through Denver, and that gust was the winds of change.

If the Avalanche finish the season at the bottom of the West, there's no better time to clean house than when you have two first round draft picks.

As a fan, this isn't pleasant news.

It's tough to see a young team win 41 games only to watch them (most likely) lose a core player for draft picks less than a year later.

I feel like at this point if the Avs matched he would just leave in 2 years as a UFA anyways.

What a ****ing ridiculous contract, 6.5 QO?

I think it's down to the Avs right now deciding whether they have faith in Stastny staying. I think the way he's decided to handle this situation is he's after a big paycheck at the end of it all. So even if we match, what happens after? Sign O'Reilly to a ridiculous 6.5 mil/yr contract?

I hope we don't match this...6.5 QO offer in two years? No thanks. O'Reilly's agent is a genius.

With our luck, O'Reilly go into beast mode, help the Flames make the playoffs, and we'll end up with the 20th overall pick.

OMG this is almost as if its a brilliantly conducted plan of O'Reilly's.

1) force your minimum qualifying offer to be 6.5 Million dollars, 100 grand cheaper than Stastny's 6.6.

2) Out-perform Stastny in their contract years, forcing Avs to keep O'Reilly and Trade/Let go of stastny

3) Profit

Stastny, Duchene, O'Reilly in Contract years next season. Pretty much forces Avs FO to keep only 2, unless Stastny significantly decreases his salary (4 mil range)

Worst case ROR becomes a 70 point #1C. The Avs end up with two picks one at #10, the other at #18. One becomes a bust, one becomes an average center.

They just cleaned house. They got 3 years into a rebuild and now they are going to go back into a rebuild. **** that. This team is a small market team now. If they aren't, put your money where your mouth is.

Does anyone realistically see CGY finishing in the bottom 5 with O'Reilly added to their roster? Hell they are 8th at this point... Iginla & O'Reilly with Tangs on the left side? MATCH MATCH MATCH MATCH!!!

If O'Reilly keeps playing well for the Flames we'll never hear the end of it from Dater

So according to this http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=18342 every team that doesn't make the playoffs this year gets the same percentage chance at 1st overall pick.

If that's the case, I like the idea of taking the picks even more. would give us a roughly 14% chance at 1st overall pick(assuming the Flames and Avs miss playoffs).

I just want to highlight this to everyone.

If the Avs match, he is not going to a rival club in this conference or our division for this year. If the Avs match they can claim their hands were forced on his contract.

If the Avs don't match try get an underwhelming return.

However, if we do match what do our options become?

We can sign him to a regular contract extension. We can go to club elected salary arbitration (only thing I'm hazy on is if the qualifying offer is a minimum during arbitration, I believe it is not). We can also let him walk from arbitration, let another team sign him for 5.3+ mil OR retain him for 5.299 or less if someone signs him to such a contract. Lastly we can also sign him at any point to any contract we deem if he elects to sign for less than his qualifying offer.

Downsides? If we do elect for arbitration, we deny arbitration and we've qualified his contract, then he is eligible to accept the QO and become a UFA the following season.

Other options? If we does not play 60 games next year we can make his QO a two way deal. I can't imagine him risking being sent down for 875k if no team takes him on at 6.5mil during a waiver transaction.

Ahaha this is funny. No but seriously it means that the odds of winning the lottery didnt change from last year. The 14th overall pick still only has a .8 chance of winning(or whatever it is)
