And the Flames management makes the team even worse... Sure, they've been doing bad contracts for a while. And they are known for being bad on the draft as well. Now this...
Glad it ain't us. Sucks for Flames fans. Their division must be laughing their ***** off.
If I'm Sherman I wouldn't even have to think about this; I wouldn't match. Two picks (most likely) in the Top 10 in this years draft is way more valuable than having one pick and paying ROR that kind of money.
Why do I have an awful feeling he's going to end up on the Bruins?
Similar sentiment here.
I have a feeling Corey pull a Cammalleri and go to Leafs, the rival team of his childhood. Carlyle is there, and maybe he likes Carlyle. (Cammy was a Leaf fan who chose Montreal)

We should trade for O'Reilly's rights and then not match the offer to get Calgary's 1st.
Seriously don't understand what the Flames management is thinking. With a high pick in a deep draft and O'Reilly's salary going forward, this will probably end up being very similar to the Kessel deal. Salary-wise, they must have another deal ready to go. Maybe Iggy. Doubt they can afford to bring him back next year.
Shrewd move by Calgary, they either get a proven young C or they force Colorado to pay more than they want for a player they have bad blood with. The 1st would be used to try and get a player who might turn out like O'Reilly anyway...

Seth Jones will be cheaper and better than ROR.

Terrible asset management by that franchise. O'Reilly is definitely an upgrade on what they have at centre, but he's still just a 2nd line guy.
If the plan is to get O'Reilly and stockpile other picks by trading veterans like Iginla, Kipper and J-Bouw, then sure. But we have no reason to believe they'd ever do that.
Seeing as how CCalgary's 1st rounder was in play, we should have ooffered a package, e.g. Andrei Markov.
Tried bringing that up in the Markov thread, 98% of the replies were "Trade Markov? are you ****ing retarded?" and wouldn't even hear of the idea of at least seeing what's out there for him..
Can't win with people
You can't be serious. CGY offer sheeted a 22 year old.
Rangers all over the Lightning, now 2-0.
RDS will be weeping tonight.
Either way, that top 5 pick was in play and we could have nailed it. There are a lot of different packages Montreal could have offered of comparable value, e.g. COLE+DESHARNAIS.

I think it's a terrible move.

Calgary keeps trying to put off the rebuild and shoot for 8th. They are hurting themselves. They should deal Iggy, Kipper and Cammy and reload for the future. Esp with the draft being so deep this year they could clean up.
Instead they do this. Doesn't make sense to me. They already traded away their 2nd to us, this will leave them with no picks until the 4th round in the deepest draft in years.
Absolutely stupid move on their part.

I said that pick was in play last year when we dealt Cammy and this proves it. Even if we had to add something... If Colorado matches we should be all over Calgary trying to get their first.
Problem is that apart from Markov, I don't know who we have left with any value that we'd want to deal.

Totally agreed, ROR as good as he is IS NOT worth 6.5 mill. Especially when your pick is likely a top 10 or top 5. Stupid move by Calgary, if I was Col I would take the pick and run with it laughing all the way to the bank.
ROR is a sure thing in the NHL, Jones may be in how many years? That relative certainty counts for a lot.
You do realize that they'll have to pay ROR 6.5M per season minimum in one year + what's left of this one ? And for that privilege, they're giving up a potentially high pick which could be Jones, McKinnon or Drouin. High risk, low reward type move for team that is NOT in win now mode. It's bad on any level you can think of. Maybe ROR will take a huge leap forward and be a heart and soul 80 pts 2 way warrior and their pick will not be high but chances aren't that good that this will happen.
Odd move by Calgary, but if ROR is as good as he thinks he is then this might be enough to put the Flames into a playoff spot. They are close now. They desperately need good centreman and ROR is young.
It's a lot of money though and because the last year is for $6,5m Calgary will have to offer that as his qualifying offer in two years. That's tough. Is ROR really worth that?
