I think people forget how offer sheets work. Calgary has a ton of salary coming off the books in the next two seasons, and they don't have a lot of young talent, or talent at all.

Calgary's first thought was probably "what can we get him to sign that Colorado would not match." They managed to offer Colorado a poison pill (3 million, not pro-rated for less than 30 games, and a 6.5 million qualifying offer in two years) without risking giving up a lot (only 2 picks.) Calgary will worry about the cap and such at a later date.

Right now they're in limbo. Not making the playoffs, not a bottom 5 team. This move can get them into the playoffs soon. It also is a sign of effort to get Iginla to sign a retirement contract.

I think it's a good sheet from Calgary, personally.

Wait we don't like that offer sheet? I think its a pretty gutsy and good move personally. Doubt Colorado will match and those 2 picks are a whole lot.

Ya, for a team that is unlikely to make the playoffs, and is losing its goalie and franchise player to retirement soon, giving up high picks doesn't seem like the smartest move.

If I'm a Flames fan, I'm thrilled to get O'Reilly. But if you care about the cap, I'm pretty pissed that he's getting overpaid now, and soon getting superstar money. Trying to justify it by saying Iginla will be gone, or Kiprusoff will be gone, or they've "got to do something" are red herrings. It's a bad deal, period. Ryan O'Reilly will never be worth superstar money.

Worst case scenario for Colorado. He's turned into an expensive cancer for them if they match and the return is going to be peanuts if they don't.

Just from reading everyone's (McKenzie, Dreger, Friedman, etc) anonymous GM sources, it looks like a lot of quality offers went Colorado's way, but they were trying to squeeze a king's ransom out of it. They weren't making any realistic demands.

If at all true, which it might not be, then Colorado mishandled this worse than originally thought.
Then again, this could just be GMs with an ax to the grind because Colorado dismissed their offer of a mystery box of crap that they were trying to sell as gold.

I think it's more likely that Sherman bungled it.

Never heard the offers, but rumors that Colorado was asking for the moon for him.

Avs have matched the O'Reilly offer sheet.

And now they have 2 years to prepare for the next round

Also hilarious to note that they were just down 2-0 to the Flames and took a timeout just prior to the announcement.

If his intent was to 'ever' get a trade. If his intent was to get him signed then well he succeeded, and a short-term deal no less. They can always trade him before next deadline.

And the Avs ALREADY announced they matched the deal, per team twitter.

Avs already matched the offer sheet. Crazy, I would have taken the picks after this tantrum.

Granted, this was an ugly situation. Mishandled in every way.

But the difference between having O'Reilly and not having him is worth more than just a 1st and a 3rd.
So I guess it makes sense, but it seemed like the relationship had soured beyond reconciliation. Guess not.

I'd be surprised if Sherman wasn't fired soon. He's a terrible GM.

Interesting. Maybe they wanted to tell the team?

Are they having a battle of who can be the more inept GM? Why would they match that? Take the picks

Likely just be a perfectly timed coincidence - they were not playing well.... at all.
They let in 2 goals in the first 5 minutes, something like 30 seconds apart.

So if the Avs matched the offer sheet, how far off is that from what O'Reilly was asking?

LMAO - this seems silly. Sign and trade? Seems legit at this point.

Wonder if O reilly thought they would match. Wonder how he'll do on that squad now, seemed like a lot of burnt bridges but time to get back on the ice I suppose.

I can already see the trade board talking about ROR next year.

Picks weren't enough. Calgary with O'Reilly would have been in the 10-14 range. The top tier of 4 (Jones/MacKinnon/Drouin/Barkov) are the only guys I would take without hesitation for O'Reilly. The next tier I might take (but wouldn't feel great about) if only for salary considerations. But once you get out of the top 9 or 10, I wouldn't take those guys over a proven O'Reilly.

Colorado can re-assess what to do with O'Reilly next year if they need to trade him.

I could have sworn he wanted like a five/six year deal a la Subban before he had to settle for two.
