ROR offer is nuts for Calgary. I like him, but he's not even a proven 1st line player, yet to keep him they will have to qualify him as one in a year+ And I don't think a mid-round 1st and a 3rd is bad compensation for ROR. Good player, but Colorado can actually draft, so they could likely flip that pick into a good young prospect.

Refresh my memory, if O'Reilly signs the offer sheet, what picks do the Avs get?

He already signed the offer sheet. If the Avs don't match it, they get the Flames 1st and 3rd this year

While I'd never support not drafting, Calgary is brutal at it. Since drafting Dion Phaneuf in 2003, Calgary has been been terrible (and they were pretty bad priro to Dion as well). From 2004 to 2012, they drafted 62 players, 17 of which reached the NHL. Of those, only 4 have played 100 NHL games so far, Mikael Backlund, Brandon Prust, Dustin Boyd and Adam Pardy. Boyd and Pardy aren't even in the NHL anymore (Pardy's currently up with Buffalo but was in the AHL until recently). So, in essence, the Flames are batting 2/62 in terms of drafting NHL caliber players thus far, though a few prospects, such as Tim Erixon, still have the jury out and could pan out, and some drafts are still a bit to early to judge, like those from 2012.

Keep in mind that right now, over the past nine drafts, the Flames have just over 25% of their players even play an NHL game. The benchmark for success tends to be around 40%. Typically, teams strive to have at least two players per draft year make it as legitimate NHLers (164 games in a career for a skater (IE two full NHL seasons), 82 for a goalie (one full season)). For those nine years, Calgary has a total of 3 so far. As well, you usually want to land at least one core player (top 6 forward, top four defenseman, starting netminder) per draft. While a few guys, such as Janowski and Erixon, could reach that, thus far not one player draft since Phanuef would be close to reaching the level of a core player.

Statistically, Calgary has by far the worst ratings for prospects. I did a team by team review in last years draft thread that Almeida started and Calgary was terribad, by far the worst drafting team in the league. It was pitiful.

Yeah, if ever there was a team to safely fritter away its draft picks, its Calgary.

That ludicrous qualifying offer would really stick in my craw, though.

Colorado is kinda screwed on the trade front. If they match, they'll have to wait a full calendar year untill they can trade him. But, there is a good chance that it would be after the trade deadline.... Deadline usually right around today. And it's a 2 year deal. So, he be going into his UFA status and the Av's won't be able to trade him!!

I agree.

Neither team is likely to make the playoffs, so 2 picks in the top 14 in this draft would be pretty sweet.

No, he'd still be a RFA for two more years, but with a qualifying offer of 6.5m (which is ridiculous)

Calgary has a high likelihood of picking top-five!

Feaster is stone cold ********. The overall money isn't terrible, but the 6.5 qualifier next year is redonkulous.

Wow, that was fast. I wonder is they quickly matched with hopes of trying to squeak in a trade before the deadline next year

I thought, ok, maybe signing a 22 year old 1st line center would signal the start of a much needed rebuild. Oops...

Possibly, but as someone brought up earlier in the thread with this being a shortened season and the trade deadline further into the calendar it would be pretty easy to put together a case saying that the Avs have X number of days before the trade deadline next year since the lockout screwed dates up and the calendar year rule shouldn't apply.

I actually liked the offer sheet by Calgary, thought it was a good move. Interesting that they immediately matched. Either way, the drama is over and he is set to play now. He is part of their core and a developed player, can't blame them for not wanting to hit the reset button.

Picks are picks. Matching is having the player who is worth those picks right now with Duchene and Landeskog already accruing years towards getting raises. Good move by both teams.

The problem now is that Duchene, Landeskog, and O'Reilly will all be needing new deals in the same offseason and O'Reilly has a 6.5m qualifying offer.

My question is that if the Avs value O'Reilly so much that they matched this deal in a few hours, why wasn't a deal done much sooner? Obviously money wasn't that big of a deal, because he's getting 6.5m next year

The issue I would have as a GM, and why I wouldn't have matched isn't whether the picks are worth the player, but rather if the player is worth the RFA qualifier. You aren't just choosing between a player or draft picks, you are also choosing a $6.5 million cap hit down the road, unless you can get him to resign cheaper which is anything but a guarantee.

Not only that, but if I'm Duchene or Lendeskog, I play hardball with Colorado. If ROR can get an offer sheet, they definately can, and how can they not match on those two if they matched ROR?
