They play nothing, and I mean, nothing alike. Not sure where you can see any similarities.
They both forecheck hard and like to yap and get under their opponents skin.......they are certainly not the same but to say that there aren't any similarities at all is nothing short of asinine.
Since at the beginning on the season on EA Sports NHL 13 Gallagher was rater 63 overall and he's since been bumped to 79 overall witch is what Desharnais was rated all last year and continues to be rated 79 this season. I know it's only a game but EA has been proven to be pretty accurate in their assessments.
Side Note: Galchenyuk was rated 60 overall to start the season and has also been bumped to 79 overall. Not that any of this matters but it's interesting that EA has bumped them up so much in such a short period of time

I have been pondering; watching Gallagher making quite the mark in our lineup. I love to see him play, always super energetic, always giving the extra edge physically..
And then, I got thinking about what Don Cherry said a few years back about Ovechkin; that players who dominate because they give out so much of themselves physically usually peak really young and then wane out. Do you think this might happen with Gallagher over the years?

the difference between Ovechkin and Gallagher is that Ovechkin has 0 heart
but yeah i've gotta say i'm a little concern to see how he's being manhandled
I don't think Gallagher giving too much physically will cause him to "wane out." But it definitely could bring on injuries. That's the only way I see his career taking a turn for the worse. He just seems too passionate and motivated to pull an Ovechkin.
I also don't think his energy is the only useful aspect of his game. He could play a little more conservative and still use his great speed, shot and stick handling to be an effective top 6 winger.
It's all about staying healthy when talking "long term" with Gallagher IMO.

Not my point.
I believe what Cherry meant is that players who dominate BECAUSE they are physically dominant cannot uphold the same level of play for very long. Their body simply cannot take it as they get older.
The source of your domination has an expiration date, effectively.

Subban is someone that may fall in this category IMO. However he seems to be improving in the mental aspect/stick work a lot over the years too so that may help his game when he can no longer overpower players by being so strong on his skates and agile.
His style of play is pretty reckless. For a small guy like him, it wouldn't surprise me if injuries catch up to him sooner or later. He has to play that style though, that's what makes him effective.
You never know, Theo Fleury played a simlilar style and was close to the same size and had a long, great career.

This isn't true at all. Ovechkin plays with a ton of heart.
What he lacks is brains. Ovechkin tries to do the same thing every time.
And to answer the question, yes with Gallagher's height and playing style, there is a concern he will get broken down easily. But he's also skilled and intelligent, so I think he will adapt to the situation.

Short-sighted. Ovechkin has played uninspired for 2-3 years now, but remember his first 3-4-5 years, he was playing lights out, pedal to the metal... a lot of people thought he was better than Crosby because of his drive and intensity.
I'm actually worried about him just staying alive. He had been concussed in junior, and in 14 NHL games managed to get his 2nd one already and was a split second away from getting killed by Phaneuf last game.
I love the kid but let's not put all our eggs in his basket cause I think his body will take a toll that will seriously affect his ability to achieve sustainable success.
